. Messiah Comp

from: Universal Music Group

As has been previously mentioned, this version has some notable differences from more familiar versions, my favorite being the air "He shall feed His flock/Come unto Him" which is for contralto only. The recitative "And lo, the angel of the Lord..." is somewhat longer and more arioso-like. The air "How beautiful are the feet..." is a duet for contralto and soprano, followed by a chorus. The tempi are rather brisk, which works for the most part (especially in the opening sinfonia, which is often performed excessively slowly), however the air and chorus "Oh thou that tellest good tidings" is supposed to be adante and is much closer to allegro, and the chorus "His yoke is easy" while marked allegro, ... . Baby Einstein: Numbers Nursery
City Travel Guides > Classical > General
from: Walt Disney Video
October 26, 2004
I liked the sequential introduction of the numbers from 1 through 5, and I also liked that when showing five objects, for example, they'd start with four and add the fifth one - that introduces the basic concept of addition to the little ones. My one-year-old son thinks this is great fun and will watch the entire thing (which is a feat, as he's quite active).
My problem, as always with every Baby Einstein video I've seen thus far, is the promotional material you HAVE to watch before you get to the feature of the DVD. Lots of movies have promotional material, but you can usually choose to watch it (or not). That should be the case here, too; the fact that you have no choice but to watch it is enough to dissuade me from buying too many more of these.

. English Medieval Christmas Car
City Travel Guides > Classical > General
by: Th New York Pro Music Antiqua
January 14, 2008
This recording may be almost 50 years old, but it still resounds as the classic that alerted an unsuspecting public to the beauty and joy of medieval music. The New York Pro Musica would go on to record much more medieval and Renaissance music (including re-recordings of these selections), but this is now the only of their recordings in print. Until the entire output is restored to the catalog, this lone example must suffice. It is hauntingly beautiful and rousing by turns. This is a recording that should please a wide range of music lovers, but particularly those who already have found a place in their hearts for music of the medieval court and countryside.

. Songs Of The Angels Christmas

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain. Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ... Read More:

. Alina
City Travel Guides > Classical > General
from: ECM
March 07, 2000
I first became aware of Arvo Pärt while doing research on the Internet to locate the music Gus Van Sant used for his movie, Gerry. Alina, the "non-official" soundtrack to this sparse (but amazing) movie, is a minimal classical album which consists of extremely spacious piano works; nothing more and nothing less. But even though there are no other instruments involved, it's devoid of any austerity. The album consists of several long movements/variations of two songs, "Spiegel Im Spiegel" and "Für Alina." Both are very similar in scope and lend themselves well to each other without battling for the spotlight. Not unlike being in a daydream, Arvo Pärt gently takes us through soundscapes of forgotten time. Be forewarned, however, that Alina moves at a snail's pace, but ... Read More:

. Baroque Masterpieces (W/New Pa

As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude Malgoire, Raymond Leppard, Pierre Boulez, Sir Charles Groves and the great Eugene Ormandy. This disc features excellent performances of what is arguably the most popular Baroque music ever written. I am not usually one to give five-star ratings to greatest-hits style collections (particularly in classical), but the half-dozen performances by Ormandy make this disc a great purchase for both novices and serious ...
