This is the sequel to the movie "Short Circuit" and relies heavily on having "Short Circuit" viewed first. In the original an experimental automated warier (complete with laser and Nuke) is stuck by lightning causing a short circuit and making robot number 5 (Johnny) alive.
This movie has several other subplots and some slapstick humor.

Strapped for cash, Ben Jahrvi, co-creator of Johnny 5, is pushed into the manufacturing business, making little Johnny replicas. This movie contains a love interest (Sandy), and economics. Some critics and film historians have labeled 1981's HEAVY METAL as the last film to genuinely reflect the mishmash sensibilities of the post-hippy 1970s counter-culture, and stylistically and thematically this appears to be true. Based on the adult counter-culture cult comic of the same name, HEAVY METAL definitely is a sort of spacey concatenation of disparate visual aesthetics and heterogeneous science-fiction/fantasy narratives. But despite being a hodgepodge as a whole, the film still manages to offer a very entertaining way to kill 90 minutes.

Get the two-disc version, you won't be disappointed! Unearthed films have done an EXCELLENT job on this set - the look, sound, packaging & DVD extras are all top notch (Thank You, Unearthed, you've done it justice). I remember seeing it on CBC when it first got released (1983) & I've waited till it got it's proper release on DVD till I bought it. This was draw by the great Canadian Nelvana animation studios, therefore the labeling of the Canadian version on the second disc as the alternate version is misleading, anyway, it's Nelvana's best animation ever. Highly Recommended.

There are 88 used copies of this movie for sale, starting off at 33 cents. That may tell you something. People hate this thing so bad they are practicly giving it away!

Apparently, someone at Nickelodeon decieded it was time to make a feature film. What a better way to start out than with a sure fire classic like "harriet the spy"

I remember the hype when this movie came out. I remember the numerous advertisements for it. But mostly, I remember going to see it and feeling like an idiot.

What a great way to kick off your feature film market than to make a movie that completly sucked. Luckily, people knew a bad movie when they saw one, and this thing was forgotten almost instantly.

I give this DVD a single star not because of content (Cronenberg is the best)but because this is not a 2-DVD edition. It is listed with the same cover as the 2-disc edition and has the same 3 customer comments as the 2-disc edition. I ordered this DVD from caiman assuming it was the 2-disc edition, not the single disk edition which I recieved. Although the DVD is not unwrapped, caiman refuses to exchange or refund or except the return of this item, insisting that it is not the 2-disc edition which I ordered. Obviously I know that now, but was mislead by the listing. I cannot understand why they simply will not accept the return of this item.

It's a given thing that people are automatically gonna hate a movie if it has Keanu Reeves in it. Yet he's still one of the most bankable A-List stars. According to some, he's done a lot of turkeys and this is one of them.

OK, I'll be the first admit it's not one of his best, and that's coming from a major Keanu Reeves fan. (Check out his worst: The Last Time I Committed Suicide) But it's got the gorgeous, still beefed-up-from-Speed, Keanu in it. How can you possibly go wrong?

This short drama was satisfying to watch even though there wasn't much action. It was almost like a two-person play. It tells how an apparently strong person copes with the dramatic change in his life caused by the death of his dear spouse. Christmas traditions are not the same, so the widower adapts by renting a companion. Jason Robards and Julie Harris are delightful to watch, so professional.

Let me say something before I go into how bad this movie really is. I am a seriously big Fred Astaire fan, and I can honestly say that 30 out of 31 of his musicals have been nothing less than atleast worthy of watching. That single one that slips up, and makes it to the list of "Fred Astaire Completists only" is this one, for sure.

If Fred Astaire was not in this movie, it would not even get the one star rating, it would deserve absolutely nothing. This is a complete embarrassment, to the otherwise brilliant list of films Fred Astaire has been in. Being a completist, even I, myself have trouble over thinking that this movie is actually in my collection.
