. Long Hot Summer
starring: Mabel Albertson, Richard Anderson, Val Avery, Brian Corcoran, George Dunndirected by: Martin Ritt
May 20, 2003
I rated this film with four stars though on most measurable levels, it is worthy of maybe three. The plot is a montage, some say mish-mash of Faulkner's literary works. Still, the film works..... most of the time. Jerry Wald's production has 1950's sensibilities written all over it. A real strength of this film lies in the charismatic on-screen performance of young Paul Newman's Ben Quick and his incendiary relationship with Orson Welles' Will Varner. It is said the editing room had to re-do much of Welles' dialogue to make it intelligible for the audience. Whatever. I am fascinated by virtually every word uttered in Welles' quirky interpretation of a portly, gravelly voiced redneck hell-bent to leave his greasy thumbprint on all who would ... Read More:

. Escape From Fort Bravo
starring: Richard Anderson, Carl Benton, Polly Bergen, Harry V. Cheshire, William Demarestdirected by: John Sturges
August 26, 2008
MGM presents "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (9 December 1953) (98 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) -- Our story line and plot,
In the Civil War, Fort Bravo is a prison camp for captured southerners --- Its isolated position and unfriendly natives make escape almost impossible, but anyone who tries is always brought back by by-the-book Captain Roper (William Holden) --- Another Captain John Marsh (John Forsythe) a Confederate and a group of prisoners hatch a plot to get away by bringing in a southern belle Carla Forester (Eleanor Parker) to distract Roper --- The plan seems to work, but the inhospitable desert, the murderous Indians, and - most importantly - the Colonel apparently wronged in love mean that this is only the start --- William Holden and John Forsythe ... . The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)
starring: Daphne Anderson, Anthony Andrews, Nick Brimble, Tracey Childs, Eleanor Daviddirected by: Clive Donner
February 24, 2004
When the first second of the first scene shows you little cubes instead of people's heads, the walls, and the torches, you might think the DVD transfer has some problems. When not even the letters in the credits stay stable, you begin to wonder whether you wouldn't be better off buying an old VHS copy and turning it into a tiny-sized Divx file. ARRRRGH! Which breaks my heart, because this version of The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my all-time top ten movies. I'd be rating this with one star if the movie wasn't five-star. Too bad I can't actually see it!

. Jesus Christ Superstar
starring: Bob Bingham, Barry Dennen, Pi Douglas, Yvonne Elliman, Ron Hyattdirected by: Norman Jewison
August 31, 2004
O.K. Its' Jan 16, 2006 and I just got home from the latest stage show of JCSS with original Jesus, Ted Neely. I believe he's 62 or so and though I was a little taken aback when he first came on stage I was very impressed with his voice. I was a big fan of the "original cast" production album back when I was in my teens with Deep Purple's Ian Gillan doing a great job as Jesus. I never really watched the movie nor listened to the soundtrack version -I only wanted the original. Well I can say that it was a great show and now I will have to buy this album as well.
To top it off Judas was played by "In Living Color's" Cory Glover and he was simply outstanding.

. Paths of Glory (Full Screen)
starring: Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou, George Macready, Wayne Morrisdirected by: Stanley Kubrick
April 01, 2003
"Paths of Glory", was the work that put young 29 year old Stanley Kubrick "on the map" in terms of his name as a director, and rightfully so. Though slightly dated in its acting style when viewed from a modern perspective, Kubrick creates a very undeniable picture of the realities of war. By opting for a more tragic ending, Kubrick succeeds in undermining the institutions and nobility of war.
In spite of some continuity errors that make the film occasionally difficult to follow (for instance the fact that the soldiers are apparently French and the very old soldiers in the final scene), "Paths of Glory" definitely helps reinforce the messages portrayed in other, later Kubrick films.
