. Breaking Away (Widescreen/Full Screen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barriedirected by: Peter Yates
March 11, 2003
I have a particular affinity for this film, as it is set in the town where lived for many years, Bloomington, Indiana. Most people in Bloomington are basketball crazy; apart from this, perhaps the second most popular sport is bicycling, culminating at the end of the school year with the Little 500 bicycle race on campus (a bicycle version of the internationally-known Indianapolis 500 motor race, just 50 miles north). This is primary a campus event, with fraternities and a few other organisations fielding teams; there are also community teams, and always at least one team with the name 'cutter'. The film is a piece of fiction not just in its plot but also in the details, but it is a good story. The primary character is Dave Stoller (played ... Read More:

. The Waterboy (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Frank Coraci, Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Henry Winkler, Fairuza Balkdirected by: Frank Coraci
September 02, 2003
The Waterboy is a movie that doesn't require a lot of brain power to figure out, but it's loaded with comedy and hilarious lines from Adam Sandler. One particular part of the movie that I love is when he is in a college class dealing with the agression center of animals and Bobby is asked why alligators are such aggressive creatures. Since his Mama was supposedly right about everything, his answer was "Mama says that alligators are angry 'cause they got all those teeth and no toothbrush." That's comedy, man! Simple comedy, maybe, but it's funny all the same! This is definitely a must-have for any Adam Sandler fan. If you don't like Adam Sandler, then you're not going to like this movie. End of story.

. BASEketball (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Dian Bachar, Yasmine Bleeth, Jenny McCarthydirected by: David Zucker
June 07, 2005
A lot of people may not know it, but BASEketball is a truly classic comedy. Don't let the high-minded among us (and there are a lot of Parker-Stone haters out there) tell you any different. Not only is this film hilarious, it - like virtually everything Trey Parker and Matt Stone do - has a lot to say in a surprisingly incisive way; those who see only puerile humor and grossness in this film are not watching it closely. The opening of the film is brilliant, with its hilarious spoofing of modern showmanship and its lament for the death of tradition in sports. Nobody seems to play for the love of the game anymore - it's all about money and fame. Ever since he caught Reggie Jackson's historic third home run in that crucial game of the 1977 World Series, Joe Cooper (Trey ... Read More:

. White Men Can't Jump (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Rosie Perez, Tyra Ferrell, Cylk Cozartdirected by: Ron Shelton
May 21, 2002
Weesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and Rosie Perez all star in this 1992 flick about Billy, a white man who is a basketball hustler, and Sidney, who is just as much a hustler. The two recognize a kindred spirit in the other and set off to play basketball for money, pretending that, as a white man, Billy is easy to beat, when in reality he is about the best there is. Billy's girlfriend is Gloria, a Jeopardy! junkie aiming to get on the show and win big. (Do you know how many foods begin with the letter Q? Six!) Billy's love of hustling clashes with his love for Gloria and loyalty to his new friend Sidney. Is there any way he can truly win without losing something he holds dear? Watch this and see.

. Mystery, Alaska (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria, Mary McCormack, Burt Reynolds, Colm Meaneydirected by: Jay Roach
December 09, 2003
"Mystery, Alaska" juggles quite a few cliches, but it does so with wonderful charm and a constant nudge in the ribs. A small town in the frozen North of Alaska, Mystery loves its hockey beyond all reason. The famed "Saturday Game," played each week with religious fervor, has been brought to the pages of Sports Illustrated by a Mysterian (Hank Azaria) who has left the town for bigger and better things -- although it may be because everyone in town says he plays hockey "like a homosexual" (this is an example of the surprisingly frank and profane language Mysterians like to use, which can be jarring in what is otherwise a sweet movie). The team, led by John Biebe (Russell Crowe in a nice understated performance), is your typical bunch of loveable small-town ... Read More:

. Major League 2 (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Sports
starring: Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, Dennis Haysbert, James Gammondirected by: David S. Ward
May 16, 2000
i'm of two minds about this movie.on the one hand,i thought it was
funnier than the first, with some very comical scenes.on the other
hand,to me,the movie felt preachy and schmaltzy in the inspiration
dept.i found it a bot too heavy handed.there is a running gag involving
a "bandwagon jumping" fan in the stands that got old and tired
quickly.also, the story was a bit of a stretch, with some big leaps in
logic.yeah,i know, this type of movie is not always driven by logic, but
it was still a bit too much to believe, even so.having said that, the
movie was quite entertaining.i gave the first "Major League" movie a
3.5/5 and for me,Major League 2" is also a 3.5/5
