. The Crow (2 Discs)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Action and Adventure
starring: Brandon Lee, Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Angel Daviddirected by: Alex Proyas

I haven't read the comic... and when they made the movie I really didn't know it was based on a comic. Well I can tell that I've almost seen every movie with Brandon Lee playing in it... Although he only played in (mostly) action movies he played his best part in "The Crow"... I watched the movie the first time right after it was released. I've always been a big fan of Bruce Lee his father but also of Brandon Lee because he didn't want people to see him like his father. Brandon always wanted to play in a non-action movie and I know The Crow is one of those... His acting in this movie is good... I know they use a lot of CGI which is done superb. Yes, the fact that he was really killed in the movie made me see it even more.

Well, I hadn't seen this movie in ~20 years, never owned the video OR an earlier DVD, so it was worth purchasing. But I WAS disappointed in the "song-track" (as a previous reviewer so aptly put it), why wasn't the other music from the movie, and especially "Ballad of Easy Rider" (a personal favorite) included? And the book is a little dry for my liking - focused too much on the film-industry aspects and not enough on the times that generated the movie and what it meant to all of us who lived (even partially) during those times. On the positive side, I'd never seen the documentary about the making of the film, and it was affirming to learn that most of the actors really were stoned out of their minds while they were ... City Travel Guides > DVD > Action and Adventure
starring: Tom Laughlin, Delores Taylor, Clark Howat, Victor Izay, Julie Webbdirected by: Tom Laughlin

Any film whose main thread is that it takes an extremely violent advocate of non-violence to truly protect the non-violent, immediately has my full attention and respect. If I could have only been around in the early seventies to watch hordes of stringy-haired American middle to upper class youth cheer, in all seriousness, a denim-clad white guy kicking the living hell out of (and in some cases even kill) anyone who doesn't practice the appropriate level of peace and understanding, I would have truly been in heaven. This movie and it's enduring popularity have confirmed what I have always suspected: disagree with a pacifist and they would like nothing more than to place your head on a pike. If a person could have jammed anymore sixties clichés ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > DVD > Action and Adventure
starring: Bruce McDonald, Valerie Buhagiar, Gerry Quigley, Don McKellar, Larry Hudsondirected by: Bruce McDonald
June 29, 2004
I first saw this movie on the cbc about 12 years ago or so. Then, in my late teens, it really had an affect on me. This is probably the best black and white, Canadian, rock and roll road movie you'll ever see. I think it still holds up after all these years. The story follows Ramona, who works for a concert promoter, to northern Ontario. She's there to find the Children of Paradise and bring them back to Toronto so they can stop wasting the promoters money. Along the way she meets Don McKellar, a serial killer and Bruce MacDonald, a music video director. There's even a cameo from Joey Ramone. The ending is a little goofy but I really like this movie. It's not for everyone, though. Fans of the late 80's independant movement (music and film) should ... Read More:

Oh man. My friends and I went to Blockbuster to look for movies, and saw this movie. The cover looked totally tremendously spectacular! it was like.. omfg it owns the matrix special effect. The motorcycles were totally cool looking, and theyr swords are SO AWESOME, CUS THEY WERE CLEAR!. and oh man, i love how they recycle scenes over and over and put funny buzzing noises everytime the awesome motorcycles roll bye. The BEST, AND I MEAN BEST PART about this movie is when the girl gets naked in the torture chamber omg, my friends mom came in while we were watching, and we changed it right away, but thats another story. HAHA OMFG, THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME, the girl is hot too! and i love their ray guns, where whatever they shoot just dissapears, i also love how things explode ... Read More:

. Ms. 45 (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Action and Adventure
starring: Abel Ferrara, Zoë Lund, Albert Sinkys, Darlene Stuto, Helen McGaradirected by: Abel Ferrara

I am glad "Ms. 45" is back on the shelf, because for a long time it was hard to find, certainly up here in Canada. This film is superior to "Driller Killer" in every way except for the lead track. Nothing touches the live performance of Tony Coca Cola and the Roosters playing The Grand Street Stomp. It is quite obvious in "Ms. 45" that that is not the sound of a trumpet. Anyway, for those who don't dig this, you can't tell me you can diss it. This, his second film, is night and day between "Driller Killer". What an obvious improvement. I was hoping that the DVD wouldn't be Vanilla and have at least a directors commentary. "Driller Killer's" commentray is legendary. And while you could chalk this up as being the female version ... . Shaft (Widescreen/Full Screen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Action and Adventure
starring: Gordon Parks, Richard Roundtree, Moses Gunn, Charles Cioffi, Christopher St. Johndirected by: Gordon Parks

I always see this movie as a great Harlem detective story. Shafts pulsate with street-level lingo and a deep sense of conviction you can help but admire. In the great tradition of detective movies Shaft is clearly a hard-bitten loner who spars with friends and foe alike, then gets just what he wants from everyone.
Even though "Shaft" was an MGM release it was clearly intended for the black audience Hollywood had always ignored. The attitude of Shaft is what set it apart - it made no effort to court the white audience at all. John Shaft kept his mouth shut for nobody, and wasn't interested in carrying a civics lesson or being an ambassador from an alien race. He was openly promiscuous, keeping at least a couple of steady women on his string, and taking in the occasional admiring ... Read More:
