. Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Angela Lansbury, David Tomlinson, Roddy McDowall, Sam Jaffe, John Ericsondirected by: Robert Stevenson
March 02, 2004
Made during the Disney wilderness years following Walt's death, Bedknobs is a re-tread of the hugely successful Mary Poppins. However, if you're going to re-tread a film, it might as well be a classic! Check off the ingredients: - initially cold matronly female lead who the children and audience quickly warms to, capable and charming child leads, a perky male side-kick, an animated/live action interlude that has nothing to do with the plot, a Sherman brothers score, an episodic structure, a general magical story-book quality to the film etc. Angela Lansbury gives her most likable screen characterisation (apart from perhaps Jessica Fletcher!) and shows to those not familiar with her Broadway career that she can sing and dance. David Tomlinson ... Read More:

. Downfall
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Bruno Ganz, Matthais Habich, Thomas Kretschmann, Corinna Harfouch, André Hennickedirected by: Oliver Hirschbiegel
August 09, 2005
A very powerful movie showing the end days of Nazi Germany. It is well acted and shows the different types of people around Hitler apart from Hitler himself. One gets a real sense of what it must have been like in the bunker in the dying days of the war, as it became clearer and clearer for the characters portrayed that the Nazis had lost the war. Some of characters were clearly pathological deviants without question. Others were true believers and followers, who allowed evil to happen as they so much wanted to believe the illusion they were fed, while ignoring the reality and the brutality that was all too obvious for those with eyes to see.
Lessons to be learnt in todays world, where a new rise of fascism is evident. Time to watch out ... Read More:

. Charlie Wilson's War (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Shiri Appleby, Ned Beatty, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brian Markinson, Om Puridirected by: Mike Nichols
August 26, 2008
Senator Charlie Wilson from Lufkin, Texas, a ruggedly handsome man, who was a committed anti-Communist, with a few character flaws, who loved to have a good time, enjoyed alcohol and was a ladies' man ... became one of the unsung heros of the Afghanistan War. He was the only civilian to ever receive recognition and honor by the C.I.A. for his part in helping to drive the Russians out from Afghanistan. This film is based on the true stories written by the author George Crile in his book, "Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of How the Wildest Man in Congress and a Rogue CIA Agent Changed the History of Our Times". Essentially, there are two formulas to win this war on a global scale: the first is, "money + power = secret arms deals" and the second is, ... Read More:

. Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life (Special Edition)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Carol Cleveland, Matt Frewer, Simon Jonesdirected by: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones
June 01, 2004
Unfortunately they just do not get off the ground. Python is known for being wired provocative and in many cases cutting edge. Regrettably they missed the mark on this one. One or two skits may strike your fancy but you have to wade through the rest to get to it.
However if you like sex, violence, blood, and debauchery, could care less the fact that they have nothing to do with the absent plot, you could find this film interesting.

from: A&E Home Video
August 24, 2004
As a child I watched this series on T.V. I waited years to find it availible for purchase. This has the most actual footage from the war of any program I have viewed. The series was shot when some of the key players were still alive. If you want to see what WW2 looked like then buy it.

. The Desert Fox
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Luther Adler, Jack Baston, Richard Boone, Leo G. Carroll, Mary Carrolldirected by: Henry Hathaway
May 20, 2003
Henry Hathaway's 1951 film on Erwin Rommel, NAZI Germany's most brilliant tactician whose indirect involvement in a failed plot to assassinate Hitler resulted in his untimely death. The film is a character study and focuses more on Rommel's relationship with Hitler and the German High Command as opposed to his achievements as a military tactician. Because the nature of his death wasn't very well known at that time, the film focuses on Rommel's deteriorating relationship with Hitler and his eventual participation in the assassination plot. This is normal since, with the film being made only 6 years after the end of WWII, audiences would have been quite unreceptive to a film glorifying a German general's military exploits against allied forces. . The Great Escape (Special Edition) (2DVD) (1963)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Military and War
starring: Tom Adams, Ulrich Beiger, Charles Bronson, Robert Desmond, James Donalddirected by: John Sturges
May 18, 2004
This is the definitive story of escape during WW11. And, despite what a previous reviewer said, there were Americans in the camp, and Americans played a big part in digging the tunnel, and in all other operations. The reason no Americans actually escaped using the tunnel, was they were moved to their own compound (south compound) before the tunnel broke. The characters in the movie are composites, and are livened up a bit for dramatic purposes, but most exist. The man who was clausrophobic was a South African named Johnny Travis. He had worked in the gold mines, and was caught in a mine collapse before the war making him afraid of small spaces. He did dig this tunnel, and others, before they discovered he had a gift for making things and moved him to manufacturing escape kits. ... Read More:
