. The Stalking Moon
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: Henry Beckman, Richard Bull, Lonny Chapman, Noland Clay, Lou Frizzelldirected by: Robert Mulligan
August 26, 2008
What would a western directed by Alfred Hitchcock have looked like? Odds are that THE STALKING MOON, starring Gregory Peck, would come close. Peck plays Sam Varner, a scout in the Southwest working to round up the last vestiges of the fierce Apache tribe. Reluctantly he succumbs to the insistent appeals of a white woman (Eva Marie Saint), whom he has rescued from ten years of captivity among the Apaches, to take her and her half-breed son away from their makeshift camp. The one detail that she withholds is that her husband and the father of the boy is the notorious, bloodthirsty and diabolical Apache warrior Salvaje. And you don't have to be historian to recognize that Salvaje is patterned after the real-life Apache warrior Geronimo. Read More:

. Escape From Fort Bravo
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: Richard Anderson, Carl Benton, Polly Bergen, Harry V. Cheshire, William Demarestdirected by: John Sturges
August 26, 2008
Escape from Fort Bravo is a very good western that deals with a time and place not often featured in westerns. Fort Bravo is a Union outpost in the Arizona territory during the Civil War. Colonel Owens, Captain Roper, and a company of Union cavalry must watch over the stockade full of Confederate officers while also dealing with the Mescalero Apaches. When four of the prisoners escape with a woman from the fort, Captain Roper and a small detail must chase them across the barren desert as the Apaches close in on them. This is a very good western from director John Sturges(The Magnificent Seven). It is a beautifully shot movie with a good score by Jeff Alexander and Stan Jones. While the first part of the movie is good, the climax is the best part. Stranded in the desert by ... Read More:

. Broken Trail
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: Todd Allen, James Russo, Greta Scacchi, Rusty Schwimmer, Robert Duvalldirected by: Walter Hill
September 05, 2006
Duvall is the one of the greatest character actor ever. The compelling tale of a ruggedly wise cowboy and his estranged nephew quest to deliver horses to Wyoming is great storytelling. I loved the character development (the actors had minimal scripts and emoted so well on screen), the anguish & drama and the storyline. This movie gives Thomas Haden Church the juiciest role I've seen him in--strong, honest, stoic. The Chinese actresses bring gut-wrenching performances--reflecting the hard lives of slaves sold into a life of prostitution in a foreign land. I'm buying this video as part of my library re the Chinese American experience.
