"Rome" represents one of the saddest misjudgments in video history. HBO assembled an incredible cast, built an amazing set, and started telling a story that could have held an audience for many years. Unfortunately, when the series was initially slow to draw fans, HBO decided to cut their losses, and started wrapping up in a hurry. The great loves, hates, and political and moral issues that had begun to be developed were resolved in a couple of episodes. Then, about the time they offed Caesar, they realized that they had taken a potential huge hit and killed it as well.

Across the Universe is a musical directed by Julie Taymor (Titus, Frida). The film incorporates over 30 songs from The Beatles into it's story and is loaded with endless references to other Beatles' songs and associated lore. As a tribute the film is outstanding. As a film it is as visually beautiful as any movie released in 2007 and is definitely worth owning on blu-ray if you are a Beatles fan or, at the very least, you're familiar enough with their catalogue that the many references to their music are not over your head. The other big bonus in Across the Universe is its young cast. The film includes great performances from Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood especially. I did not know that Wood could sing and evidently she can.

How do you ensure somebody's legacy as a hero? In the good old days, you wrote a book. Nowadays, you make a movie -- and if you're lucky and it's really, really successful, you can retrospectively even make legends out of dangerous criminals. Not that that always works, of course. I am no history major, just a history buff, and as such, this series blew me away. Very well acted, un-manicured, beautiful settings, quality stuff with lots of extras. The documentary about Mccullough's writing habits is excellent. It makes you want to know more aout this time and place in history. Now proudly sits on the shelf next to another Tom Hanks masterpiece, Band of Brothers.
