. Race to Dakar
City Travel Guides > DVD > Drama
from: Capitol ( EMI )
December 05, 2006
I love Charley Boorman and the whole crew from 'Long Way Down' (and Round), so I was looking forward to 'Race to Dakar'. While it was fun to watch, it was still a bit of a disappointment. There's a lot of time wasted on the introductory segments and flashbacks and they used the same clips over and over. The soundtrack was terrible. Once Charley has his fall, the plot gets lost completely. Charley, admittedly, spends the rest of the time running around and clucking after his team. I did like Simon and Matt's story, it just got lost in bad editing. Overall, it was more of lovable, affable Charley, but it wasn't up to the same standard as LWD/R.

. Amazing Grace

starring: Nicholas Farrell, Albert Finney, Tom Fisher, Michael Gambon, Ciarán Hindsdirected by: Michael Apted

If we could keep the story aside for a moment, which in and of itself is very powerful, the components of the movie: music, cast, acting, and direction are brilliant.
You will be glad you spent the time watching this film.

Everyone in their life will encounter someone who is brilliant at doing something. Pangs of jealously will ensue, and we will examine their behavior, probably thinking to ourselves that they do not deserve to have this great gift, that they do not deserve to have a talent that we lack. All through life, all through history, the talentless have always been jealous of the talented. The fact that we are not created equal and some of us will have to work very hard at things that come so easily to others is the theme that runs through Amadeus - Salieri is so jealous of Mozart's talent that he conspires to let as few people as possible hear Mozart's music, and ultimately tries to kill him by sending him mad.
The movie opens when Salieri is an old ... Read More:

. The Road to Avonlea: Season Three
City Travel Guides > DVD > Drama
from: Sullivan
April 25, 2006
Just this year, I purchased all six seasons of Road to Avonlea (and am anxiously awaiting for the seventh season to be released!). It cost me a lot of money, but it was entirely worth it.
As a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, I can remember watching Road to Avonlea to fill the void that AGG left. I did not watch all of the episodes as they aired on television, as I was away at University, but I do remember that, when I did watch them, it really felt like those old Sunday evenings when you were a child, sitting with your family, enjoying a show. Road to Avonlea is wholesome, humourous, engaging and warm.
So far, of the sets I bought, I have watched seasons one, two and three. The episodes are positively addictive! I can't help but watch ... Read More:

. Wives and Daughters
City Travel Guides > DVD > Drama
starring: Francesca Annis, Justine Waddell, Keeley Hawes, Anthony Howelldirected by: Nicholas Renton

Sue Birtwistle and Andrew Davies are, in my opinion, the best possible combination to make perfect period drama; they are like bread and butter. Ever since seeing Pride and Prejudice (another must-see!) when I was five, I've adored both Ms. Birtwistle and Mr. Davies, and have made an effort to see every film that they have contributed to. When Wives and Daughters premiered on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre, I couldn't have been more thrilled. Lavish costumes, set design, and cinematography are always guaranteed when these two are working together. Wives and Daughters was certainly no exception. The film circles around Molly Gibson, brilliantly acted by Justine Waddell, who has also acted in many other period dramas. She plays her character with innocence and simplicity, ... Read More:
