. Big Jake
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: John Agar, Richard Boone, Jim Burk, Bruce Cabot, Virginia Capersdirected by: George Sherman
April 29, 2003
"Big Jake" is one of my favorite John Wayne movies, which is not to claim that it is a classic film. This film is directed by George Sherman, who first began doing Westerns back in the late 1930s, although Wayne is known to have directed some scenes as well. In retrospect I would argue that this 1971 film is the first of a trio of film that Wayne made at the end of his career reflecting the passing of the Western. The other two would be Wayne's next film, "The Cowboys," and obviously his final film, "The Shootist." Of that trio "Big Jake" is clearly the most fun and my biggest complaint about this film is that when it is shown on television they almost always have the first commercial break at the absolute worst moment. Ok, so you have to get through some TV movie hokieness to appreciate this movie. At first, I was distracted by the awkward direction, acting, and accents, and the general TV-movieness of it all. But as the movie went on, I was able to overlook those things and started to enjoy it, especially Angelica Huston as Calamity Jane. Some quality about her, a grittiness and strength, seems just right for the role. Melanie Griffith is not always a favorite of mine, but she has a sweetness that makes her Dora enjoyable. Gabriel Byrne as the lovelorn Blue makes a good match for her. He is suitably and touchingly romantic here, not as much "darkness" to his character as in most roles. I enjoyed their story, though I was distracted ... Read More:

. Hidalgo
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: Elizabeth Berridge, Frank Collison, Jerry Hardin, C. Thomas Howell, Malcolm McDowelldirected by: Joe Johnston
August 03, 2004
Think I spelled that right.
Quickly: a pretty cool epic style movie, great production, cool it was based on a true story.
Summary: follows the story of Frank T. Hopkins, historical 'cowboy' who raced his horse Hidalgo in over 800 endurance races. The movie focus' on his Native Heritage (starting with the Battle of Wounded Knee) and his entry into the Ocean of Fire, the worlds longest and most brutal endurance race.
The Good: the production on this was top notch. It had that ever pleasant effect of making you forget you were watching a movie. The story was well done, the charcters well written and played, and the plotline moved at a nice quick pace.
The Bad: it just wasn't as good as it could have been. Maybe ... Read More:

I'm not a fan of westerns but "Silverado" was a good one. It had a lot of action and it never became boring. A good movie to me is something I can watch over and over and not get bored I wouldn't mind watching it again. "Silverado" in my opinion had something unique to it, it had an African American and it had someone funny in it too. Not all westerns had a cowboy that was funny, they where all serious and I think that more western movies should be like "Silverado" in some way. Jake ( Kevin Costner ) was my favorite character and my favorite quote was said bye him too! "All I did was kiss a girl" I like this quote because he said it funny and it's the reason why he got in trouble. Well the sound track in the film was in my opinion to dramatic, but it wasn't to bad ... Read More:

. Heaven's Gate (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > DVD > Westerns
starring: Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Brad Dourifdirected by: Michael Cimino
April 01, 2003
Some people might like this movie for its anti-western and realistic view of the Far West. Others might just hate or won't stand its long sequences, its 220 minutes (while Once upon a time in America by Sergio Leone is 229 minutes, and The lord of the Rings 683 minutes), or the truthful exposition of the internal conflicts between the immigrants settlers and the americans. But if you take the time to shut yourself from the press' critics, take an unbiased attitude, and let yourself get engulf by this movie, you will live an adventure; whether or not you will hate it, or love it like I did.
You have been warned. And if you can't stand watching the whole movie in one ride, try watching it like a novel; take a break from time to time.
