. Notting Hill
City Travel Guides > Music > By Decade
by: Soundtrack
May 18, 1999
I've just finished watching the movie again for what seems like the hundredth time and I think that the music is a major reason the movie was so good. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a classic heartbreak song that moves you as does Al Green's "...Broken Heart". For me personally Costello's ballad "She" is perfection in it's effort to convey the mood of the scenes it's in, so perfect, that it's going to be the song sung by my good friend at my wedding.

. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
City Travel Guides > Music > By Decade
by: Soundtrack
August 18, 2008
The Grinch has successfully displaced Ebeneezer Scrooge as the spirit of anti-Christmas for today's audience. And there are similarities. Just as Tiny Tim was a strong factor in Ebeneezer's redemption, the children are a strong factor in the Grinch's redemption. It's a pleasure to be able to hear the great Boris Karloff narration, along with the songs, and then afterwards to again hear the songs reprised. Of course, this is a short CD, just barely 30 minutes in length. One must realize that while the program was supposed to be a half hour long, nearly a third of the time was used for toy advertisements. The irony of it all, a beautiful story telling us that the joy of Christmas is in the spirit of Christmas, not in the getting toys ... Read More:

. The Rose
City Travel Guides > Music > By Decade
by: Bette Midler
March 18, 1997
The soundtrack for this 1979 film is the most paradoxical album of Bette Midler's career. "The Rose," the album, is arguably the best of Midler's live albums, but the songs are all new and more in the mode of rock 'n' roll ala Janis Joplin than the 1940s boogie woogie and other song types that brought Midler to prominence. As if to underscore the point, "The Rose," the song, plays to Midler's strengths as a vocalist while running counter to all the other songs on the album. It is a beautiful song and there really is a sense in which it is the only true Bette Midler song on the album, because the rest are being sung by Mary Rose Foster, a.k.a. "The Rose," the singer. But overall, the soundtrack is basically the best parts of the ... Read More:

I remember listening to these songs in the 80s when I was little. I guess you could say I 'grew up' on this stuff almost as much as on 80's music itself. It's largely a Motown/Soul collection, but it's varied enough to fit more than one audience. 1) "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," Marvin Gaye -- Everybody has heard this pop/soul hit before, right? A mid tempo ballad about hearing rumors 'Through The Grapevine'. This is one of the classic breakup songs. 2) "My Girl," Temptations -- Another widely known hit that many people today even like. This is probably the defining Motown song of the era. Sunny, pop inflected R&B about being with 'My Girl' and feeling good. 3) "Good Lovin," Rascals -- We take a turn ... Read More:

. Harder They Come
City Travel Guides > Music > By Decade
by: Jimmy Cliff

In response to the "best of the rest" review, Bob Marley is over-rated. Sure, he's a talented musician, but he's certainly not the end all be all of reggae music. In my opinion he's not even the best. He's basically just over-hyped in this country, and sadly many people I talk with can't even name a reggae musician besides Bob Marley. Many great musicians have been over looked, so contemporary popularity certainly isn't too accurate a measure of greatness. This album is great because it features the best songs of the best reggae musicians ever. Despite the diversity of styles on this CD, it all flows together very naturally. And despite what that reviewer said, Jimmy Cliff's lyrics are among the best of all time. They eloquently express raw emotion, hopes ... Read More:

I LOVED this soundtrack! It brought back loads of memories from when I was six (that's how old I was when the movie came out), and the songs are B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! My favorites are 'Journey to the Past', and 'Once Apon a December'. They bring back the most memories for me. Blast from the past! Even if you haven't seen the movie, you'd love the music anyway. Liz Callaway's voice is lovely! Also, the soundtrack features bonus tracks, and special one of 'Journey to the Past' in spanish. Very cool! I highly reccomend this soundtrack to anyone!

I have to agree the missing Kristen Vigard rendition was a GREAT disappointment for me. I am really tired of Hollywood releasing soundtracks for movies that don't have the songs on the disc the way they were in the film. Why would I want to hear anything other than what I heard at the cinema? This will not help me relive any good/great moments of a film if the soundtrack sounds nothing like my experience. I would like to somehow be transported back to the moment when I say, cried, laughed, or was reminded of a loved one. If I wanted to hear a different version or was so impressed with the material, I would inquire to the composer and their works, wouldn't I? Hopefully they would be published or soon to be, no?
