Moving, dramatic rendition of "Paradise Lost" transformed into choral work by van Swieten and Hadyn that has been appreciated over the years by audiences everywhere. Here exhibited in one of essential recordings of this work by Berlin Philharmonic and Karajan supplemented by fine soloists and Viennese Choir make this a clean, exuberant effort. The sensitivity to "Chaos" and the wide range of dynamics of this piece force utmost sensitivities from composer, performer and conductor. Especially appreciated the decision concerning death of Wunderlich and subsequent addition of Fischer-Dieskau. Awe inspiring work of master performed magnificently and recorded with clarity.

. Handel Arias
City Travel Guides > Music > Voices
from: Universal Music Group
September 30, 1997
Bryn Terfel offers an engaging sound, and a very historically accurate performance of the works, other than the arias that were originally written for counter tenors. For all Baritones and Basses, and those studying and teaching the repertoire, this is a must have CD, as it employs an outstanding combination of the finest arias and the most often performed.

. Love Is A Voyage
City Travel Guides > Music > Voices
by: John Mcdermott
July 13, 1999
After reading the reviews for this CD I thought I would try a copy to get the song "Daughter of Mine" It was an OK song but I found another song on (Amazon.com) that I liked much more for my father bride dance. Its called "A Song For My Daughter" The words to this song are much better and it was nice to get both a male and female version of "A Song For My Daughter" so it could be from my dad or mom. We used the male vocal and when dad and I danced everyone had tears in their eyes. Joyce Russo

. The Irish Tenors / McNamara, McDermott, Kearns, Tynan
City Travel Guides > Music > Voices
by: the Irish Tenors
March 09, 1999
For those of us who love to curl up on the couch and listen to truly beautiful music, this is one CD you won't regret buying. With a "light orchestra", these talented men managed to turn out some of the most gorgeous and lush music I have ever heard. It must be said, however, if music brings out your emotions, have a box of tissues close by. Anthony Kearns singing "Grace" will send you reaching for them, as will Ronan Tynan's "The Town I Loved So Well". Let's talk about John McDermott. He's not Irish (He is a Scot). But the most heart rending "Danny Boy" I have never heard before. "Voyage" was so beautiful, it made me sob. Now that we have established I am a hopeless sap, please trust me when I ... Read More:

. If Ye Break Faith We Shall No

...but bought this Canadian import as well. You might wonder why as there are only two different vocal tracks, but those who know and love the voice of John McDermott MUST have every song he sings in their collection. I was not disappointed. Not only were "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "A Scottish Soldier" well worth having, the instrumental medley on the first track is beautiful. I am also able to keep one cd in my car and the other in my home! John McDermott is blessed with the most beautiful, melodious tenor voice I have ever heard. It warms the heart and soothes the soul and this lovely tribute to the veterans of war is one of his best efforts. John doesn't just sing about the tragedies of war, he does ... Read More:

. Lucia Di Lammermoor Comp
City Travel Guides > Music > Voices
from: Universal Music Group
January 01, 1990
This Lucia di Lammermoor is quite good but it's not the best and not the greatest Sutherland-recording. Compare it to Sutherland's early recordings of Lucia and notice how matronly Sutherland sounds here and how her diction and pacing has become worse. As for the difficult cadenza mentioned in a former review, that is untrue. Sutherland doesn't sing anything other great Lucias haven't sung previously or after her. I find mature Sutherland to be too old and mushy to sing girly roles, her live-Norma from the same period shows that THIS is where she belonged at this time. Just like with Callas and others, Sutherland's early Lucias are much better than this late one. Also, contrary to other reviewers, I think Sutherland sounds much more dramatic in her earliest ... . Joshua
City Travel Guides > Music > Voices
from: Hyperion

This wonderful recording not only provides further proof, not that it is necessary, of Handel's genius, but demonstrates what can be achieved when academia and passion integrate. This is, without question, sublime Handel and it is performed with such conviction that one wonders how it is that Joshua is not on the top of everyone's list of favorite Handel works. It is certainly one of mine, now. "O Had I Jubal's Lyre" sung with great delicacy and precision by Emma Kirkby and "See, The Conquering Hero Comes" are most probably the two most well-known pieces in "Joshua" but they are not, by any means, the only memorable one's. This oratorio abounds with beautiful music both in the form of arias and choruses. This is another wonderful ... Read More:

. Carmen Comp (Frn)

January 01, 1990
Solti conducts a spectacular Carmen. This is a legendary Carmen that is surely one of the finest in the catalogue. If you want an exciting spectacular Carmen, this is it!!! This is the one to get. It was based on a Convent garden production and the live atmosphere comes in convincingly. It boasts Domingo's first Don Jose - a terrific portrayal. The creamy singing of Kanawa is mesmerizing from start to finish. Legend Trayonas is amazing as Carmen. Van Dam is the conssumate artiste. You don t know Carmen if you haven't heard this.
