. All I Intended to Be
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Emmylou Harris
June 10, 2008
It's about 3:45am, so I'm a little short on words. I will say this though. The amazing records that continue to be produced by the artists who got their start in the 60's and 70's keeps growing. Prairie Wind, Modern Times, Dirt Farmer, and now All I Intended To Be. Emmylou's voice is smooth, clear and character laiden. The production and instrumentation is complex and enveloping. If this record doesn't receive a grammy this year I'll be shocked!

. Slip (Ltd Ed) (W/Dvd)
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Nine Inch Nails
July 22, 2008
emember how frustrating it was when Nine Inch Nails would make us wait four to six years between albums? That trend, it appears, has entered the rearview mirror stage, along with the label messes and rehab stints that helped cause those interminable gaps. Consider the new math after The Slip hit hard drives as a free download last Monday: over the last three years, Trent Reznor's released as many full-length records of new material (four) as he did during the first decade of his recorded existence. Since Pretty Hate Machine, the concept behind Reznor's work with Nine Inch Nails has been blunt and straightforward: dystopian techno-metal forged from the fusion of man and machine. But since last year's Year Zero, which came bundled with an alternate ... Read More:

I don't think that I can be terribly articulate about this or explain the reasons this album resonated with me so strongly. I think it is just the sheer quality of the material and mastery of the artist.
I apologize in advance if the vagueness of this review is not terribly helpful. But, I must say that as a musicholic, it is very rare for me to react in so strongly a fashion upon first listen. I encourage you to listen to the bits and pieces you can find online to see for yourself. The hooks, vocals, tunes and melodies have totally grabbed me. I can't remember the last time that I felt that I was hearing something brilliant after listening one time. I'm on my second listen right now and it not only holds up, I'm increasingly impressed ... . Narrow Stairs
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Death Cab for Cutie
May 13, 2008
Love isn't watching someone die, contrary to what Ben Gibbard memorably sang on Death Cab for Cutie's major-label debut. No, love is watching someone grow and change and still staying with them-- whether we're talking about family, friends, romantic interests, or a little college-town indie rock band from about an hour-and-a-half outside Seattle. Death is just the dénouement. In the three years since their platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated Plans, Gibbard and Death Cab producer/guitarist Chris Walla have both entered their thirties, coming off a wave of successes that included 2003's Transatlanticism going gold and the debut by Gibbard side project the Postal Service becoming Sub Pop's best-selling disc since Nirvana. That's a whole lotta love. ... Read More:

. The Reminder
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Feist
May 01, 2007
this cd's on a lot at work, and i have to say that it isn't that bad to listen to. if left to my own devices, i would probably only listen to one or two songs of my own volition, but the cd in itself has a nice easy flow to it. some songs can be rather melancholy if you're in the appropriate mood, but on the whole i'd say it's a light-hearted, easy-going album. at the very least worth a listening to, even in passing.

. In Rainbows
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Radiohead
January 01, 2008
I tried to make the title less corny, but it's too true to the point that there's no other way to describe it.
Whether you're new to Radiohead or an avid fan, you can't go wrong with this release. It really is bliss, absolute bliss. Each song is crafted in a delicate and incredibly melodic manner with each word coming out of Thom Yorke's mouth something that will provoke your thoughts and challenge your imagination. The band is as tight as they've ever been. Each note played here is crafted with the utmost of care yet nothing ever sounds contrived, pretentious or out of place. The people who gave this album one star never actually gave reasons, they just seem to generally dislike Radiohead. But to be honest, one listen of this record and you will not ... Read More:

. The Baroness
City Travel Guides > Music > Alternative Rock
by: Sarah Slean
March 11, 2008
... after a couple of years of waiting! Yes, "Orphan Music" was great, but the new material we fans desperately longed for, here it is at last! Now, Slean does not rush things, and we love her all the more for that: every song is a delicacy, every melody a soothing, every word a shard from the poet's heart.
It is pure Sarah Slean: what you loved in the previous albums you shall find here as well, although one might feel that "The Baroness" is indeed endowed with more maturity than her past efforts. Could it be love's omnipresence (or absence of it...) that made her turn her lyrical subjects and musical ears toward a more somber, solemn, simple source of inspiration?
Anyway, whatever else I might add about "The Baroness", buy it and see and hear ... Read More:
