Although Amy Winehouse has been on the music scene since the release of her debut album "Frank", in 2003, it is only since the release of her latest album, last year's "Back To Black", that she has made any real impact.
"Frank" may have earned her a Mercury Music Award nomination and an Ivor Novello award, but she had very little chart success with the album or singles.
On "Frank" she sounds as if she has performed a thousand times in smoky jazz clubs.
So it comes as some surprise to learn that she is just 24 and was raised in north London.

The 23 year old Philadelphian turned to music while recovering from a horrific accident and her recovery process led to a new career.
She was knocked off her bicycle by a car and suffered near-fatal head injuries, as well as pelvic fractures that still force her to walk with a stick.
Before the accident she'd already been working part-time as a lounge pianist to help fund her studies, playing tunes by Duke Ellington or Billy Joel against a hubbub of hecklers and clinking glasses, and one of her doctors said she should try music-making as part of her recovery process.
The recordings she made in a wheelchair at her hospital bedside were eventually released in 2005 as Some Lessons - The Bedroom Sessions.

"The Orchard" continues with evolution of her artistry off the beaten path and the result is an incredibly personal album.

This is an outstanding recording, completely deserving of the "Best Album" Grammy that it won in 2008. It's unprecedented for a jazz recording to get that honor, and a huge accomplishment for Hancock and his stellar cast.

Each of the contributors brings something a little different. To my ear, Corinne Bailey Rae's take on River, a much covered song, is definitive and perfect, and is my favorite. Contributions by Joni herself, Tina Turner, Norah Jones and all the others seldom miss a beat.

Instrumentally, this is a jazz album (and not in the jazz-lite world of Norah Jones and her ilk), and probably will be difficult for many accustomed to the pop environment to appreciate at first. It's spare at times, and at others lush, always ... Read More:

I love how Joni Mitchell sings about social justice including the environment. I've always loved her because she's a rebel and her lyrics go way beyond the usual ones of love songs. And this CD only reinforces why I love her. She just keeps getting better.

This album stands up to many listenings, and never seems to get tiresome. The material is a compilation of the traditional and contemporary songs popular during Cuba's musical heyday in the 1920's and 1930's, though it's just as listenable today.

Tropical, sultry, romantic -- a listen can transport you to an island paradise, or provide background for a relaxing evening. If you like this CD, especially the romantic ballads, I'd recommend Ibrahim Ferrer's solo album. Too bad these masters were rediscovered so late in life that may have precious little time left to further enrich us with their talents.

I have been waiting for another CD from Loreena McKennitt. And it was well worth the wait.

This CD is just as beautiful and wonderful as all the rest of her CD's have been. She creates moments of bliss and wonderment.
