I don't exactly consider myself a big Neil Young fan, I'm not the kind of person who would buy every album with his name on it (especially many of the albums he done in the 1980s, such as Landing on Water), but After the Gold Rush, his third album (second with Crazy Horse) is truly deserving of classic status. This album has been with me most of my life, thanks to my parents owning a copy. This album also premiered a certain 17 year old by the name of Nils Lofgren, on piano. This album has many different styles from acoustic ballads, to rockers, to short singalongs. The album starts off with "Tell Me Why", which is a truly great acoustic piece. I cannot think of one weak album by Neil Young AND CRAZY HORSE that came out during the 70s. Some of his albums with other musicians didn't quite cut it for me (e.g., Journey through the Past). ZUMA is a perfect example of Neil & Crazy Horse doing what they do best: flexing their rock and roll muscles.

Forget the crummy cover art. Ignore the throwaway "Through My Sails" which I think he did only to give the three other guys a little work doing their downturns. This album cooks with gas and nitro. "Drive Back" is a rocking blues tune, as is "Barstool Blues". We all know the moody boiler, "Cortez the Killer", is an overlooked classic. And "Stupid Girl" probably has one of the most outrageous lyrics in music ... Read More:

Other musician seem to like these songs more than Cohen does; for the collection Essential Leonard Cohen he selected only one track from this album, Famous Blue Raincoat. Among those who highly esteem Songs of Love and Hate is Jennifer Warnes who covers Famous Blue Raincoat on her album of the same name which also contains a duet with Cohen on a longer version of Joan of Arc.

I love many othe Neil Young albums ...... but not like this one, the classic of classics.

It is sooooo "rusty" and "raw" emotionally and musically and so "pure" from the heart.

The band is so tight, Neil;s voice on this still gives me goose bumps. The rawness that just cuts you up.

Cinnamon Girl - Opens up the album with those wonderous guitar. Tremendous power in them licks, from the gut. I can hear that song 1000 times in a row.

Then we have this country, folk stuff added with Cowgirl and Down By The River. Cowgirl my favorite and after years and years, never board of that long solo that kills with that unique power, passion and "roughness" of that solo tat is so interesting. So much emotional ... Read More:

One of my all time favourite cds. Daniel Lanois's songwriting and production skills come together in this strangely compelling collection of songs. Unlike Acadie, whose spooky and quiet spirtualism permeated the recording, this disc is wider ranging from the quiet ballads of Rocky World and Marie Claire to the more exotic ringing tones of the title track. What is remarkable, is that despite the diversity of music on display here, Lanois's passionate and, at times, etheral production values bring everything together in a most satisfying way.

One of the few discs where every track stands on its own merits, but the whole is so much greater than the sum of its parts.
