. Set Yourself On Fire
City Travel Guides > Music > Canadian Music
by: Stars
October 12, 2004
This Stars album just captivated me from the very first time the melodies started emanating from my speakers. It just sucked me in and wrapped around me like a warm fuzzy blanket. And I'm not joking, it was almost magical. I could feel the rhythms take hold right away and send me on an awe-inspiring journey. It's all pop perfection, but unique and challenging enough to separate itself from the rest of the mainstream drivel and mediocrity out there today. The opening track sets the mood, and it definitely doesn't stop there. Almost every song is upbeat and dreamy, ringing out youthful wonder and optimism. Especially with songs like Ageless Beauty, Amy's vocals and the instrumentation hearken back the era of Lush, a band that sadly ended way before ... Read More:

. Night Train (Restored/Rm)
City Travel Guides > Music > Canadian Music
by: Oscar Peterson
September 16, 1997
Well, this is it! If I could only have ONE of the dozens of Oscar Peterson CDs to play on the proverbial desert island, THIS would be the one! Recorded in 1962.....post-Herb Ellis (guitar) era; Ed Thigpen (drum) era. So much pleasure, of course, to be heard from BOTH eras!....but this one tops 'em all for me. THE definitive versions (by any swinger!) of Georgia on My Mind, Moten Swing, Easy Does It, Things Ain't What They Used to Be, I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good), and two I wasn't familiar with which I fell in love with: Band Call, and Hymn to Freedom. The chordal progressions alone are ear candy, and if your heart doesn't respond, call 911 ASAP!

. The Trinity Session
City Travel Guides > Music > Canadian Music
by: Cowboy Junkies
November 03, 1988
This is one solid recording. The Trinity Session is worthy of being called an audiophile's delight. The sonics are fabulous, and the music ain't bad either! Margo Timmins voice is haunting. Whoever recorded this disc knew what they were doing. This should be manditory listening for engineers. [Those that aren't already deaf.] I'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite track, they are all great. "Blue Moon, Song for Elvis, and I'm so lonesome I could cry," come to mind. While I love, Mott the Hoople's "Sweet Jane". The Junkies give it a new lease on life. I know Lou Reed wrote it, never been a big fan of his style, with the exception of "walk on the Wild Side. Okay, I'll admit his version isn't too bad, but The Junkies do it so well.

. More Best Of
City Travel Guides > Music > Canadian Music
by: Leonard Cohen
October 07, 1997
After being stunned by the genious in Cohens first greatest hits, I had to pick this one up to see what other greats he had out there. Big mistake. This music has no structure and no raw emotion like his older works. Even the lyrics are pretty tame compared to earlier work. Obviously musicians change over the years but this sounds like something you would hear down at an Atlantic City lounge, but with a terribly weak singer. Having a band is a waste of time, most of this music sounds like it could have been generated by a cheesy synth. I will continue to hunt down the old greats but this is just Elvis later years wish wash with nothing thought provoking except what happened over the years.

October 29, 1996
joni is the blonde in the bleachers to graham nash..that interesting circle of talented artists that hung around laurel canyon....sharing and inspiring the great american music that followed the Byrds breakthrough...joni was one of the matriarchs, along with cass elliot, of that important movement...its repeated, crosby stills and nash sang their first official harmonies together at joni's house...and joni could easily hang with the boys...she could write and chord with the best of them...buy this "Hits" album to sample joni, understanding you omit so much when you deny yourself the opportunity to play her stand alone albums and grow your mitchell ear organically...joni said recently "once people awaited me like the rain, now the janitors of shadowland flick their brooms ... this cd is awesome! if u love simple plan i definately recommend u to buy this cd. they have really grown up since their first cd. i have to admit i didnt like this record at all when i first heard it. but i came to realize that is was amazing. they have changed their style a little bit but u still have the same feeling u get when u listen to them. if they had the same sound on every record u would probly get tired of them. i am still completely in love with them and u should listen to them. they rock!
