. Greatest Hits: We Will Rock Yo
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Queen
August 17, 2004
For a Greatest Hits -collection, this is an excellent one. Containing all Queen-hits from 1974-1980, CD provides a lot of pure listening fun.
Casual fans make a good buy with this, but required is Greatest Hits II containing later hits by Queen, from 1982-1991. With these two you get a pretty good view for why Queen was and still is so special.
So why purchase this edition and not the older one? (Greatest Hits originally in vinyl 1981) Well, as technology develops, we get better sound with these newer CDs.
Also, this disc contains a rare singles edition of I'm In Love With My Car (from A Night At The Opera -album), not included in the original edition. It's a good song, well worth listening, to put it mildly. ... Read More:

. Vampire Weekend

I was hesitant to like this disc initially. When I heard the background of the band, the influences and the sound affiliations; I was thinking it was going to be way too derivative (which seems to be way too common today). This album works, even though it is short in length (play it twice!). The influences abound from The Beat, General Public, early Police and various 'Two-Tone' bands and the occasional dash of Violent Femmes. It strongly reminds me of the way I felt when I first listened to Outlandos D'Amour. The songs are infinitely listenable, mostly upbeat and dare I say, fun. The band's description of themselves as 'Upper West Side Soweto' is apt. The strong songs are Oxford Comma, Mansard Roof, A-Punk and M-79, with One (Blake's Got ... Read More:

. Dig Lazarus Dig!!!
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
April 08, 2008
The prolific Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have been refining and revitalising their music for decades but have not reached the end of their inventiveness yet. Severely cutting back on the trademark wailing violin and spooky piano - and with a noticeable dearth of songs about dead girls - "Dig, Lazarus Dig!!!" is rockier and funnier than the "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orheus" offering.
That 2004 dazzling double opus would have left lesser bands gasping for creative oxygen, but their thirteenth studio LP rather suggested a band with limitless artistic energy and endurance.
There's a sense of fun here - not always a mainstay of the previous 13 Bad Seeds albums - but we're back to Cave the poet, Cave the laconic chronicler, and he's being ... Read More:

. Continuum
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: John Mayer
September 12, 2006
Wow, what a transition for John Mayer. From a typical, heart-throb musician, to an evolved musical heavyweight! Continuum is pretty much perfect. His guitar work is stunning, I'd even predict him to become an icon similar to Eric Clapton over time. The songwriting is very mature, and every song is engaging from start to finish. My favorite record of all time, and this isn't even my genre of expertise. Incredible.
