. Gold: Greatest Hits (Ltd.Ed)
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Abba
October 26, 1999
Nineteen of ABBA's best songs are plenty, but you won't tire of them. It is amazing that four Swedes (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as writers and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog as the main singers) could take such simple English cliches and turn them into pop music magic. Despite sometimes maddeningly simple lyrics, the song arrangements were unnervingly catchy and the multi-level layered compostions are fascinating. The keyboards and synthesizers were used in some of the more ingenious ways during the seventies to produce that unmistakeable ABBA sound. The energy and nearly anthemic enthusiasm eminating from each song marked them all as instant classics, no matter how jaded or synical the listener. It is doubtlful ... Read More:

. Worrisome Heart
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Melody Gardot
March 04, 2008
The 23 year old Philadelphian turned to music while recovering from a horrific accident and her recovery process led to a new career.
She was knocked off her bicycle by a car and suffered near-fatal head injuries, as well as pelvic fractures that still force her to walk with a stick.
Before the accident she'd already been working part-time as a lounge pianist to help fund her studies, playing tunes by Duke Ellington or Billy Joel against a hubbub of hecklers and clinking glasses, and one of her doctors said she should try music-making as part of her recovery process.
The recordings she made in a wheelchair at her hospital bedside were eventually released in 2005 as Some Lessons - The Bedroom Sessions.
Picked up by the same DJ ... Read More:

4 STARS; An generally enjoyable disc that may be simply REM trying to "return to their roots" rather than their actually breaking any substantial new musical ground (as some critics have suggested)... This disk may represent a transition to something more interesting and transcendent, but that remains to be seen... In the meantime longtime fans will enjoy the retro sound and style, and newer fans will get treated to some of what was one of the best folk/rock American bands ever...
While this disk is above-average for REM music since they became a trio, some songs sound a bit forced in terms of their loudness and "edginess", hence less than their fully authentic selves, and the songwriting is a bit spotty... (I admit that REM's early CDs ... Read More:

When I first saw the name of this band I immediately thought they were the latest heavy metal band on the scene. Boy, was I wrong! Then seeing the front sticker on the CD bearing Tom Petty's name clued me in a little more as to what they would probably sound like, but this is Tom Petty literally returning to his roots by recording an album with his 1970 band, of which some of the band members are also part of The Heartbreakers.
For those of you who are only familiar with Tom Petty via the songs that have made it to commercial radio, this CD will seem like a departure, a giant leap away from his Top 40 and adult contemporary days of long ago. Right from the start, with "Shady Grove", it's obvious that this is a different road for Tom to follow, even though ... Read More:

Lizz has never been shy of experimentation with her sound - seemingly exempt from any commercial pressure, she has been allowed a journey (perhaps by her label) that many of her contemporaries would truly envy.
"The Orchard" continues with evolution of her artistry off the beaten path and the result is an incredibly personal album.
Working again with producer Craig Street (a producer famous for his work with a broad palette of singers such as Cassandra Wilson, k.d. lang, Me'Shell 'Ndegeocello), she moves further away from the accessible jazz of her 2003 debut "Salt" and toward contemporary soul without sacrificing any of her music's sensuality or spare beauty.
Her debut album was a great success critically, but "Dreaming Wide Awake" was an attempt ... Read More:

. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Soundtrack
July 25, 2006
There are some magnificent, some great and some merely competent interpretations of Leonard Cohen's music on this soundtrack album. First the highlights. Tower Of Song by Martha Wainwright with its intricate guitars is a powerful interpretation of the classic. The lilting and sensual Tonight Will Be Fine by Teddy Thompsom is magnificent - his voice sounds similar to that of Springsteen.
Then comes the tremulous and atmospheric Winter Lady by Kate & Anna McGarrigle and Martha Wainwright, a true gem. Beth Orton does a splendid version of Sisters Of Mercy with her slow and emphatic enunciation supported by lovely backing vocals. Perla Batalla's Bird On A Wire and The Traitor by Martha Wainwright with its opening trumpets are great, and both have exquisite ... Read More:

. Twenty Five (Greatest Hits) -
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: George Michael
November 21, 2006
Twenty-Five is George Michael's second greatest hits album after 1998's Ladies & Gentlemen, since which he has released one covers album in 1999 and one album of new material in 2004. While this is a very listenable album for mixing Wham songs with solo material, which L&G didn't, it also suffers for the all-too-often decision to include newer but lesser tracks on a hits album at the expense of the older, bigger hits (U2, you're on notice). In GM's case, his last album, Patience, a good album but hardly a classic, is given representation with an overly generous 5 songs (6 if you count Shoot the Dog, which was released on his UK version of Patience), while Faith, his biggest album with 6 Top Ten songs (4 going to Number One) is limited to only 3 songs. Furthermore, on the limited ... Read More:
