. River - The Joni Letters
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Herbie Hancock
September 25, 2007
This is an outstanding recording, completely deserving of the "Best Album" Grammy that it won in 2008. It's unprecedented for a jazz recording to get that honor, and a huge accomplishment for Hancock and his stellar cast.
Each of the contributors brings something a little different. To my ear, Corinne Bailey Rae's take on River, a much covered song, is definitive and perfect, and is my favorite. Contributions by Joni herself, Tina Turner, Norah Jones and all the others seldom miss a beat.
Instrumentally, this is a jazz album (and not in the jazz-lite world of Norah Jones and her ilk), and probably will be difficult for many accustomed to the pop environment to appreciate at first. It's spare at times, and at others ... Read More:

. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Foo Fighters
September 25, 2007
This is the journeyman's album. Play it in your car and drive - you'll understand why. It's reflective, honest, haunting and beautiful. "The Pretender," their first single off the CD is defiant and classic Foo. Each song progressively pulls you in, but I have to say my ultimate favorite is the second song on the disk, "Let It Die". There's a subtle show-stopper quality to it that keeps bringing me back. All in all, a fantastic album that deserves to be on everyone's shelf. You'll be able to listen to it again and again and never get bored.

. Ultimate Hits (W/Dvd)
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Garth Brooks
November 06, 2007
For a guy that's retired, Garth still manages to keep himself in the spotlight at least once a year. Maybe he's restless; maybe he's just so damn smart! Occasionally putting out a song connected to a movie or a special event or an album of tracks that got cut has kept Garth on the charts at least once a year since he "retired."
Now comes the "Ultimate Hits." This compilation of his whole career to date is a great set. I hadn't listened to much of his stuff lately but as soon as I bought this set and popped the cds in, it's really amazing how much I remember liking all these songs from the first time they were released. Go ahead, do it yourself and you'll find yourself singing along to pretty well every song on the 2 discs. The new cuts are ... Read More:

. Smilers
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Aimee Mann
June 03, 2008
Although Aimee Mann is not your typical frontpage superstar, this woman has built a steady and devoted following since the mid-80s (when she burst onto the music scene as the leader of the long-gone band Til Tuesday). Two decades later, having survived more ups and downs than many of her musical peers assembled together, she is still an essential and creative artist with a deeply personal songwriting and performing style - not to mention a truly independant spirit in a business where style is often more important than substance.
"Smilers", her sixth complete solo album (not counting the brilliant "Magnolias" soundtrack) continues her tradition of biting, sharp and introspective pop songs with everything you'd expect from her, all the while avoiding ... Read More:

. White Album
City Travel Guides > Music > Music
by: Beatles
January 01, 1990
Ironically The Beatles entitled their Sgt. Pepper follow-up "The Beatles" when it was really a solo effort by four musicians. There are few harmonies on this album, and minmial songwriting collaboration. Also, a good third of the songs are disposable (by Beatle standards) such as Honey Pie and Piggies. Yet despite the dips in quality, The White Album is an album I play regularly from start to finish. I suppose that a lot of the White Album's charm comes from the sequencing of songs that juxtapose rock with country with folk with experimental; that four composers are at work; Paul excels with Back in the USSR and Blackbird; that George's songwriting takes a big step forward (White My Guitar Gently Weeps just may be the best cut); that John ...
