As part of a pre-release marketing strategy, I received a free 8 gb zune for personal use. Along with the zune, I was sent the premium zune headphones and an AC adapter for charging.

At first glance, all products were heinously overpackaged. The players come in those hard plastic-wrapped cases. I purchased a Creative Zen player which came in a nice box, one that I have kept which holds all my product instructions, extra chargers etc. At any rate, this is really a point of minor contention - it's just a pet peeve of mine.

The player itself is rather nice - I really enjoy using it. It is lightweight and very easy to use. The touch pad is quite nice, and making your way through the various menus is rather intuitive. ... Read More:

I owned the Zune 80gb for two days before I was underwhelmed enough to return it. Microsoft lured me in with supporting dvr-ms recorded tv files and alas - it "no workie". It seems the dvr-ms files created in vista are not the same as the dvr-ms from XP Media Center Edition (my OS). So unless I buy a vista upgrade I can't watch my recorded tv shows on the shiny new zune.

Rather than use more cash for new operating system I decided to use that extra cash for the iPod Touch and it was the best decision I've made in a while. The zune headphones were nice, the 80gb was plenty but the Touch is in a class it's own, sorry Microsoft, I'm a iPod guy now.

Ye, I know it's not an iPod and yes it is made by Microsoft but if you can get past that then the Zune is really a great MP3 player. Wireless sync and sending are brilliant and well executed, and the desktop software is stylish and easy to use. The whole social paradigm sets the Zune apart from other players.

I haven't used the 80GB but the 8GB is perfect for at the gym.The main drawbacks I can see are the lack of Apple compatability which is unlikely to arrive soon and the lack of DivX support. It would be great to able to watch my television shows on the way to work. All of the main accessories such as cases and charges are available, however more third party support would be nice.

Firstly, the look and size of the player. It is slightly smaller than the 30 gig, and the front has been replaced with a squircle Zune pad that is touch sensitive and works very well.
