. Palmy Days
starring: Miriam Hopkins, Joel McCrea, Paul Cavanagh, Helen Westley, Billie Burkedirected by: Elliott Nugent
August 03, 1999
A very dated but rather fascinating study of the power of wealth and contentment which is eventually found at the "bottom of the ladder". This was one of Sam Goldwyn's "cheeky" prestigious films that - in the midst of the Great Depression - lectured the hoi polloi on both the virtues of marital fidelity and genteel poverty! Matriachal Mrs. Lorrimore, head of the the once wealthy Lorrimore clan, schemes to save the family fortunes by organising a "profitable marriage". Joel McCrea is infinitely wholesome as usual, but the picture is practically saved - in a large part, anyway - by the playing of Miriam Hopkins in her role as the unfortunate - but eventually contented - Phylis Lorrimore. The notoriously poisonious Lorrimores are additionally enacted by the excellent ... Read More:

. Four Faces West
starring: Joel McCrea, Frances Dee, Charles Bickford, Joseph Calleia, William Conraddirected by: Alfred E. Green
January 01, 1998
Four Faces West is a superb little Western, and it is satisfying to see it released on DVD. McCrea, Frances Dee [his real life wife], Charles Bickford [Dee's father], and Joseph Calleia head a fine cast. McCrea is eminently believable; his trademark taciturn, self-effacing character is captivating--not a single shot is fired in the entire movie! Bickford's Pat Garrett is also a stand out. Now, let us hope that some of McCrea's other oaters get released---maybe RAMROD (with Veronica Lake), or the playful SADDLE TRAMP (with John McIntyre) and CATTLE DRIVE (with Dean Stockwell). And there is STRANGER ON HORSEBACK, another superb little Western....and RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, already on VHS, desperately needs DVD release.

. Sullivan's Travels
starring: Preston Sturges, Joel McCrea, Veronica Lake, Robert Warwick, William Demarestdirected by: Preston Sturges
March 01, 1992
Directed by Preston Sturges in 1941, this classic screwball comedy with a message is definitely one worth watching. The film opens with famous Hollywood director, John Sullivan, trying to persuade his bosses to let him make a picture about poverty, O Brother, Where Are Thou? His producers proceed to ridicule him about being privileged and that he knows nothing about troubles. They tell him how they had to grow up selling newspapers to get through college and having to support a widowed mother and three sisters and two brothers. Sullivan realizes they have a point and decides to set out to find some trouble. Of course, as soon as Sullivan leaves the office, the bosses confess they were lying about their troubles, adding a bit of comic relief. Since the bosses feel it would be ... Read More:

. South of St. Louis
starring: Monte Blue, Nacho Galindo, Dorothy Malone, Zachary Scott, Bob Steeledirected by: Ray Enright
July 01, 2001
Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott, and Douglas Kennedy star as friends and partners whose ranch is destroyed as the Civil War rages on. Needing money to restart, they end up running guns for the Confederate Army, leaving McCrea's girlfriend Dorothy Malone behind and tangling with saloon singer/businesswoman Alexis Smith. However, each man wants something different, putting the former friends at odds with each other. South Of St. Louis is a passable film, neither exciting enough to be memorable, nor dull enough to be given a bad rating. The actors are competent in poorly drawn characters, the script average, the direction acceptable. Alexis Smith's saloon singer appears to have some spark to her in the beginning, but she quickly fades. The film needs some spark to get it going and to make the audience ... Read More:
