.K.D.Lang: Live in Sydney
City Travel Guides > VHS > En français
from: Warner Music

February 24, 1998
k.d. lang, she of the "big bones" and the small letters, is a talented singer and performer. She knows how to work the stage, and how to work her audience. Her performance on this video release is virtually flawless, and her hardcore fans will certainly love it. The rest of us will enjoy it--I certainly did--but may ultimately find that it is not indispensible. For all her subversive "gender bending," there is something classically "show biz" about lang. Her vocals are powerful, but also rather conventional. There is little about her actual music that is quirky or subversive. You could certainly play the bulk of her music for Mom or Grandma, and they'd never raise an eyebrow. If they catch the video, they ... Read More:

.Thieves (Les Voleurs)
City Travel Guides > VHS > En français
starring: Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, Laurence Côte, Benoît Magimel, Fabienne Babe
directed by: André Téchiné

Deneuve is in a subdued role in this film. She's also in a supporting role so the film cover is a bit misleading. The story is not as strong as others that she's chosen.

Daniel Auteuil is great as the cop who is entangled in the life of a trouble-making young woman. Extremely sexy in this role, he plays the role of a strong yet conflicted law enforcer well.

The film is a bit weak in its flow. It's not the worst film but it's also not extremely good either.

City Travel Guides > VHS > En français
starring: Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Richard Denning, Neva Patterson, Cathleen Nesbitt
directed by: Leo McCarey

I have watched this film over and over again and never get tired of it. The only thing that bothered me in the story is, Terry McKay deciding not to let Nickie (C. Grant.) know what really happened and why she could not meet him at the Empire State Building. Had she done that, he could have at least made some decisions accordingly. If he really loved her, he would have helped her get through this tragedy instead of her going it alone. Even the man she had been living with, offered to tell him, and she said "NO", and, I found that to be a bit cruel on Terry's part.
Nonetheless, I still love this movie. The clothing/fashion back then was fantastic as well!

When I first saw the movie I was hooked on the spot. The cast and the acting was good along with the sets and camerawork.Jeanne Moreau and Gerard Depardieu are a perfect match as mother and son in the film. But I wanted to see more of Jeanne Moreau in the film and want to see more highs and lows in the mother-son relationship. The scene which nearly made me cry was Moreau's character at the door asking for her son's forgiveness.Give Jeanne Moreau a good script and she will give you your money's work.

Like everyone else with any musical taste I love the Stones, and have been following them since I was fifteen and was hooked by "Satisfaction". That said, there seems to always be a propensity by whoever does the mixing for Stones' movies/DVDs to screw up the sound (maybe the Glimmer Twins themselves?). For instance, I have a number of bootlegs from the 1972 tour (Mick Taylor, decadence, hooray!), most of which are brilliant, full-bodied and powerful, then you get "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones", and it is comparatively anemic (actually awful) - guitars too tinny, the bottom rumble eliminated, Jagger too loud, and instead of sounding powerful, it sounds fragmented not like a real band at all. "At the Max" continues this tradition ... Read More:
