. Le Samouraï
City Travel Guides > VHS > By Genre
starring: Alain Delon, François Périer, Nathalie Delon, Cathy Rosier, Jacques Leroydirected by: Jean-Pierre Melville
May 16, 2000
This film has the indelible reputation of being a classic French film Noir; as being the inspiration for John Woo's THE KILLER, and Jim Jarmusch's GHOST DOG, and certainly influenced Jean Reno in THE PROFESSIONAL. It, in turn, was most certainly influenced by Alan Ladd's premiere role as "Raven" in THIS GUN FOR HIRE. Director Jean-Pierre Melville was a veteran of several French crime films. This one was easily his best. He died six years later. It was released in America in 1972 under the title, THE GODSON. This is a very dark tale of a meticulous assassin living very secluded and alone in a rundown apartment house; inconspicuous, hiding in plain sight, a Spartan existance, a monk's simplicity and pure dedication to vocational ... . Weekend
City Travel Guides > VHS > By Genre
starring: Mireille Darc, Jean Yanne, Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Valérie Lagrange, Jean-Pierre Léauddirected by: Jean-Luc Godard
January 01, 1998
Jean-Luc Godard's film Week End is loaded with his obsessions with outrageous characters, political and philosophical ideas, and so on, and many viewers have claimed this to be a full on political film. From what I could gather after seeing a poor yet manageable copy of this film, I saw that this is possibly his best effort in terms of abrasive, surreal though bravura directing. He leaves the camera on his characters, with their flaws almost shining off them (which serves as an asset in some scenes), and yet most of the time it feels like he's directing a comedy of these events- comedy of errors. Consider the scene where the woman has the monologue in her panties and bra, how she leads up such telling, informatory details to a payoff that gives ... Read More:

. Zombie
City Travel Guides > VHS > By Genre
starring: Lucio Fulci, Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson, Al Cliverdirected by: Lucio Fulci
February 17, 1998
I enjoy watching zombie movies and I'd heard a lot about this one before I managed to get my hands on a copy. Some people had told me it was a classic of low budget filmmaking, others had warned me it was an absolute steaming pile of zombie pap. Now, having finally watched it, I don't think it's either of these things.
The acting is bland in general, with the exception of veteran British actor Richard Johnson (looking a bit out of place, but having a great time hamming it up as the slightly mad Dr. Menard) and smirky Roger Moore look-alike Ian McCulloch. Al Cliver isn't too bad as a tough-guy tourist caught up in the zombie infestation, Tisa Farrow (yes, that's Mia's little sis) drifts through much of the movie looking distant and dazed, and Auretta ... . Land and Freedom
City Travel Guides > VHS > By Genre
starring: Ian Hart, Rosana Pastor, Icíar Bollaín, Tom Gilroy, Marc Martínezdirected by: Ken Loach
April 20, 1999
The acting in the film is exceptional, especially the female protagonist. The problem with the film is that it doesn't adequately develop its two principal concerns: the Stalinist/Marxist betrayal of the Spanish Civil War and the developing romantic relationship between the protagonists. Lesser concerns are left undeveloped as well, such as David Hart's life after his return from the revolution. All we know is that his granddaughter reads Hart's old letters and newspaper clippings after his death. The lifetime effect of the revolution on Hart is anyone's guess. The film's virtue is its historical accuracy. The significance of the Spanish Civil War can hardly be explored in 109 minutes. The film needed to be much longer.

starring: Xu Zhu, Renying Zhou, Zhigang Zhangdirected by: Tian-Ming Wu
September 12, 2000
This is an extraordinarily great movie, a all time favourite in my opinion. I watched this movie two times about 10 years ago, the second time with my parents. This movie harshly critises the severe gender discrimination in China, at the same time revealing the great hardworking and kind characteristics of the Chinese people.
I am supposed to participate in a speech contest later. Suddenly re-telling this movie came to my mind, thus wanting to do some research and buy a DVD here. On second thought, I will re-tell this movie based on my memory first in the speech contest before buying this DVD.
