City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Napoléon
.Napoléon
City Travel Guides > VHS > Military and War
starring: Abel Gance, Antonin Artaud, Acho Chakatouny, Jean Henry, Damia
directed by: Abel Gance

March 01, 1992
As my previous writer annouced "Napoléon" has some missing facts about the french revolution. Actually he is right, but Gance knows about this. He planned "Napoléon" as the first of six parts about the life of Napoleon. But he only got 1.5 mio. Dollar for all six parts, but already "Napoléon" costs about 1mio., so the last parts were cancelled. This is, why the french history is not complete within this movie.

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Dark Journey
.Dark Journey
City Travel Guides > VHS > Military and War
starring: Conrad Veidt, Vivien Leigh, Joan Gardner, Anthony Bushell, Ursula Jeans
directed by: Victor Saville

April 10, 1998
I bought this video to add to my growing collection of Vivien Leigh films. Of course, this is a must have. It captures Vivien before the Gone with the Wind phenomenon. On a whole, the plot was a bit slow and the sound quality made it difficult to understand all the actors, many of which have thick accents. What makes this film worthwhile is Vivien's performance. She truly carries the film! Vivien Leigh only made a handful of films, and it is interesting to hear the change in her voice. In her last few films her voice is husky, an effect of her habitual smoking. Though, in her earlier films, like DARK JOURNEY, her voice is light and almost musical. DARK JOURNEY is a must have for any serious Vivien Leigh fan!

City Travel Guides > VHS > Military and War
starring: Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Robert Benchley, John Hubbard, Osa Massen
directed by: Sidney Lanfield

January 26, 1994
I'm one of those for whom a second tier Fred Astaire film is still more enjoyable than just about anything without him. And there is no question that Fred is at his best in this one. Unfortunately, he just isn't given first-rate musical material around which to wrap his massive dancing abilities. His partner is the extraordinarily capable Rita Hayworth, who spent her teenage years as her father's dance partner in the years when she was both abused by him and when she looked completely Hispanic (plastic surgery, skin lightening, and dying her hair transformed Rita Cansino into Rita Hayworth). They really do make a nice couple, though Fred had the rare ability to make almost anyone look like they were born to dance with him.

The plot ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Roots Vol IV
.Roots Vol IV
City Travel Guides > VHS > Military and War

January 01, 1980
I just had seen Roots saga on DVD. For me it's the first time I've seen it since 1977. I watched it within a day and came away from it moved and intrigued. Roots is a true classic and one of my favorite books. The miniseries is the best program I have ever seen. Kunta was my favorite character in the book as well.

Even though the young Kunta Kinte is only in the first two episodes, LeVar Burton is what made the show for me. Levar Burton is a revelation and it surprises me that he isn't doing more movies. He reminded me of those silent film stars who show with their eyes. The rest of the actors performed their characters just as well, and it gave me an impression of them playing their characters with the whole of their hearts. In this story ... Read More:

This is one of the better historical films made about the war in the Pacific. and the 'thirties and 'forties aviation navy.

I was in naval aviation near the time this was written about, and know the aircraft depicted. The depictions are accurate; one of the rare movies not to throw in the wrong airplane in a battle scene. Like many other similar films about that period (Midway, Pearl Harbor, Tora, Tora, Tora, etc.) using U.S. Navy film footage from the color documentary, filmed aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, The Fightin Lady, the footage shown was appropriate for the type of aircraft shown, including my favorite naval fighter of all time, the F6F "Hellcat" Grumman fighter which is credited with shooting down nearly eighty ... City Travel Guides > VHS > Military and War
starring: Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr (II), Ray Walston, Juanita Hall
directed by: Joshua Logan

September 03, 1996
Based on James Michener's book `Tales of the South Pacific', this Rodgers & Hammerstein's play is adapted for the big screen.

There are overlapping stories of different people with extremely different backgrounds and how the cope or not with each other in a time of adversity during the second world war in the south pacific.

This is a musical and the songs (most have the feel of the 50's, others are timeless) tell the story best of all. Be sure to also obtain the soundtrack.

You will recognize that many of the best actors of the time were picked. This includes recently deceased Ray Walston who played Luther Billis.

There was some decision to do some dubbing of the songs; however it does not distract form ... Read More:

i love this movie and have since i was a kid. i first saw it in a movie rental place and thought the name was kind of funny so i picked it up and i thank myself for that day every time i watch the movie, which i now own. its a story about two villages in ireland who have this kind feud and every day the kids from each village have a 'war' that ends before dinner time. its an enchanting tale of innocence, adventure, and community. i would definitely recommend it to all people of all ages. a timeless movie for all!!
