City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Lawrence of Arabia
.Lawrence of Arabia
City Travel Guides > VHS > Widescreen
starring: Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Omar Sharif
directed by: David Lean

June 23, 1998
Lawrence of Arabia is undoubtably the best movie ever. It tells the true story of T.E. Lawrence and his endeavours during WW1 in Arabia. The movie was almost two years in the making, the scope of the movie not only in it's story telling but the magnifenct way it was filmed puts above and beyond all other movies. The one thing it sadly proved however is that the Academy of motion pictures can be brain dead, never in the history of motion pictures has a finer piece of acting ever been seen and yet Peter O'Toole didn't win the Oscar for best actor, shame on the Academy and shame on the person who won it for not having the integrity to decline the Oscar because he certainly didn't deserve it.

Glory tells the story of the 54th Regiment, one of the first African American regiments that Abraham Lincoln credited with turning the tide of the war. The events portrayed in the film lead up to the heroic and bloody battle at Fort Wagner in which the 54th lost nearly half of its men.

There is nothing better than watching a film that wants to tell you a tale of great heroism, and Glory is one of the best examples of its genre. It is a war film in which perhaps only fifteen minutes of its nearly two hour running time is used to recreate battle scenes. Instead of blasting its audience with carnage and bloodshed, we get to know the men who were involved in these battles and their reasons for fighting. Glory is a film of great depth and subtlety in ... Read More:

In defense of our world, school kids from Argentina join the military upon graduation. Military service is required for full citizenship. During their term they learn their new environment and grow together or apart as they battle big bugs from outer space.

Yep it is another bug movie. And the bugs are big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to you.

However this is a great parity on military types with the grunts being boxy shaped faces and bodies to match, the elite having pointy accouterments. And the gung-ho getting their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series. Male associate soldiers from the book were replaced with female soldiers who improved the shower scenes.

Schindler's List DVD Review

The Holocaust refers to the period from January 30, 1933, when Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, to May 8, 1945 (VE Day), when the war in Europe ended. During this time, Jewish people in Europe were subjected to harsh persecution that ultimately led to the murder of 6,000,000 Jews (1.5 million of these being children) and the destruction of 5,000 Jewish communities. Schindler's List is a movie that based on these true and inhuman events. This masterpiece has given people a vision into these brutal acts. During this time Oskar Schindler saved over 1000 Jews from concentration camps over the period of the Jewish Holocaust of World War II. Schindler would forge documents and provides different names, as well as work certificates for his factory ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : In Love & War
.In Love & War
City Travel Guides > VHS > Widescreen
starring: Mackenzie Astin, Margot Steinberg, Sandra Bullock, Alan Bennett, Ingrid Lacey
directed by: Richard Attenborough

January 08, 2002
I was first struck my the musical score which was so rich and
colorful. Add to that the superb performances on the parts
of Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and you have a winner. It is therefore no suprise that the film won high honors. I think Sir Richard Attenborough's direction was suberb in every sense of the word. Such an evocotave story with war as a backdrop truly brought forth an emotional tension that is hard to describe. I also thought the supporting actors must have been hand picked because they fitted so easily in to the very fabric of the film. I certainly give this film a roaring "Five Star"
rating.

City Travel Guides > VHS > Widescreen
starring: Robert De Niro, John Cazale, John Savage, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep
directed by: Michael Cimino

February 04, 2003
A good number of viewers believe that "The Deer Hunter" is overlong and a bit overrated, probably due to a handful of scenes, but beside that its an important film that was the first commentary on the topic of Vietnam. It wouldn't have worked nearly as powerfully if the first hour been trimmed down a bit. It wasn't the director's attention because he meant to focus on "character development," base on the lives of three all-American friends, Niko (Christopher Walken), Michael (Robert DeNiro) and Steven (John Savage) through the affects of the war.

We have to sense the careless and frat-boy-like immaturity of these young men. That's why the scenes all revolve around frivolity and seemingly senseless boyish behavior; it creates such a stark contrast to the devastated characters of the three who went ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > VHS > Widescreen
starring: Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, Charles Napier, Steven Berkoff, Julia Nickson-Soul
directed by: George P. Cosmatos

October 20, 1998
After the first Rambo film 1982`s "First Blood" which reached a certain success with the audience,Stallone returned as John Rambo in "First Blood Part II" in 1985.This sequel is often remembered more than the original Rambo, who was based on David Morrell`s "First Blood" novel but was entirely rewritten for a movie but still keeping many of the basic elements of the book.Stallone gave us once again a great action movie that he can be proud of and that we can enjoy over and over again. It was filmed entirely in Mexico, not that it really matters,i just tought i`d add that in for extra information. It certainly has it`s own story and doesn`t copy the first at all,add to that it has even more violence than the first film.It seems that with each Rambo movies the more violence they have and that was proven to me with this ... This is a perfect exemple of a time sensitive movie, the material in it has a different impact that it had back in 1988.After First Blood parts 1 and 2,Sylvester Stallone returns for a third time as his famed character John Rambo. This time Stallones takes Rambo to Afghanistan. What is ironic thought is that Rambo is fighting WITH the afghan people wheras today, since since 9/11 they aren`t exactly liked. That is one bad thing about Rambo III,it is out of date and can no longer appeal to modern crowds because of that.Unless you saw it before that but even then it doesn`t feel right to know that an American hero is fighting alongside ennemies. At the time Stallone wanted to show solidarity for the freedom fighters of afghan against the Russian.Add to that the fact that this is very unrealistic and it just lost whatever appeal ...
