. Gosford Park
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
January 07, 2003
99 out of 100 people who see this movie will miss the point. The murder is a poorly done and if you want a good mystery story this is not it. The murder has nothing really to do with the underlying story. To see the real story you have two look at the two areas of the house - the upstairs and the downstairs. The people who occupy these areas, literally, live in two different worlds.
It starts when Constance Trentham (Maggie Smith) stops in the pouring rain to talk to other guests who have had a breakdown with their car. She is worried about them getting wet, but where is her maid standing at the time?
The upstairs people talk to each other as though the maid or footman, standing to one side, are not even there. They are not people, ... Read More:

The movie 'To kill a mockingbird' depicts the destruction of the innocent by the evils of the society. . Men of Respect
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
starring: John Turturro, Katherine Borowitz, Dennis Farina, Peter Boyle, Lilia Skaladirected by: William Reilly
June 28, 1994
Men of Respect is an excellent movie. It has so many similarities and some differences to the play The Tragedy of Macbeth, written by Shakespeare. I would have to say the number one similarity of the two would be the characters' names. Such as Macbeth, in the movie Men of Respect, his characters' name is Michael Battaglia, and the similarity would be they have the same initials. Then there is Banquo who is Bankie Como, Macduff is Duffy, Lady Macbeth is Lady Battaglia, and so on. In the movie, as in the play, there are witches who give Macbeth and Michael prophesies. The only difference is that in the movie they are called fortunetellers. There are still three of them but instead of the three weird sisters it is a mom, pop, and son, and they are in a backroom fortuneteller's ... Read More:

. Double Indemnity
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
starring: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Porter Hall, Jean Heatherdirected by: Billy Wilder
March 01, 1992
From the James M. Cain novel this is the finest film of its genre under the masterful of Billy Wilder and an absolute must-see for any devote of film noir. Barbara Stanwyck is at her peak as a lying, cheating, double-crossing blond tramp(who can ever forget her ankle bracelet?) who schemes with Fred Mac Murray to murder her husband for the most base reason - his insurance money. Edward G. Robinson is fine as the insurance investigator who goes by his hunch that there's more than meets the eye than just a simple suicide. With a brilliant script (the double entendres when Stanwyck fobs off the attentions of Mac Murray are a gem!) by Wilder and Raymond Chandler "Double Indemnity" is a spellbinding rollercoaster into a world of murder, lust and betrayal moodily set in 1944 Hollywood. ... . Marlowe
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
starring: James Garner, Gayle Hunnicutt, Carroll O'Connor, Rita Moreno, Sharon Farrelldirected by: Paul Bogart
March 05, 2002
Raymond Chandler's wisecracking, star-crossed private eye Philip Marlowe is transplanted into the swinging '60s where hopheads, strippers and psychiatrists join the usual compliment of thugs and goons that make his life miserable. James Garner gets a nice dry run for the "Rockford Files" TV show, while Rita Moreno bares all in her climactic stripping scene. Honestly, the script is not that great -- for the life of me I couldn't actually figure out who did what, or why... But it's still a fun film, in a campy kinda way. The film's one truly great moment is a scene is with Caroll O'Connor as a police detective who, having wearied of playing Marlowe's schnook, bursts into a violent tirade about how lousy his job is, and nearly beats the handcuffed private eye to death. It's a scene that could ... Read More:

. Pacific Heights
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
starring: John Schlesinger, Melanie Griffith, Matthew Modine, Michael Keaton, Makodirected by: John Schlesinger
September 21, 1999
It was about 8 years ago at least when I first seen this film. At that time I was young and I couldn't remember it, but I just bought it the other day. I watched it, and it was totally different from what I expected. I could only remember this film being very nasty and the villain (played by the excellent Michael Keaton) to be more scarier. Even though the film wasn't what I expected it was still good. Many people hate Michael Keaton's character in this, I can see why, but the character I more hate in this is Matthew Modine's. His character always treats Keaton's very badly in it, and he never treats him nice in it. The ending is quite tense (it was the only part I remember from when I saw it 8 years ago), a bity predictable, but it was good. The film can also try to be funny in places, it can be too. Read More:

. Untouchables:Scarface Mob
City Travel Guides > VHS > Mystery and Suspense
from: Paramount
November 03, 2000
Oh how we remember the great old TV show, The Untouchables. This was the TV movie that started it all starring Robert Stack as Eliot Ness and Neville Brand as Scarface. In black and white with Walter Winchell narrating it, this video has a documentary feel and for it's day, was surprisingly violent and realistic. Of course in this day and age it hardly seems violent, almost naive in fact, which adds to it's charm. It has a wonderful ambience of it's time and place and takes one back to those good old bad days of Chicago gangsters and back to one of the finest TV shows there was. This is a very entertaining show. Wish they'd also make a video out of the two-parter Untouchable special where Scarface (again, Neville Brand) was taken to Alcatraz and tried to escape. In fact, I know there were some VHS ... Read More:
