starring: Oliver Stone, Anthony Hopkins, Joan Allen, Powers Boothe, Ed Harris
directed by: Oliver Stone

May 12, 1998
He infers that the beast is embodied in the Central Intelligence Agency, which in turn controls the U.S. A sequence showing Nixon visiting CIA Director Richard Helms (Sam Waterston) was mostly cut out of the original film, but the video shows it in its entirety at the end of the movie. Helms and his agency are virtually said to be the devil. Flowers in Helms' office are shown to bloom and wilt in supernatural ways, presumably depending on Helms' evil whim. Waterston's eyes are shown to be coal black. He is Satan!
Nixon asks himself the rhetorical question, "Whose helping us?" while staring into a fireplace flame under a portrait of Kennedy. The theme is first brought forth in Nixon's college years, when his older brother dies, and apparently ... Read More:

If you love old movies, this is for you!!! The perfomances by Olivia De Havilland and Montgomery Clift are amazing. All the characters were well cast and all contribute greatly to the success of this movie. I loved the ending. It was not what I had expected. Highly recommended!!!

Another Great Movie That Seems Made For TV. I Actually Was On The Edge Of My Seat The Whole Time Wondering Who'd Win. It's Violent And Has A Scene With Peter Falk Cussing Like A Sailor. Who Ever Thought They'd See That. Well Overall I Really Liked It And Would Love To Own It.

Seeing this movie for the second time, twice on television, the story is about a an African-American baby abandoned by his mother, Khaila Richars, who was strung out on crack, and his foster mother, Margaret Lewin, a social worker who raises him. The first three years of the boy's life, he is nurtured and cared for by the Lewin family while his mother goes through rehab and getting herself a job and a place to stay. She learns of the child she abandons and wants to claim custody of him.
I felt that Khaila needed more time be an adult rather than trying to claim her son back. For one thing, she abandoned a baby and got hooked on drugs. And another, she needs to know how to be a more responsible adult. Although she got rid of her married boyfriend and ... Read More:

The original "Walking Tall", despite its low budget, was highly entertaining and commercially successful. The cast was very strong (particularly Baker and Hartman), the script was sound, and the direction was good. However, this sequel was shot by a different studio, with acting, direction, and script which are glaringly inferior to its predecessor. Joe Don Baker wisely declined to reprise his role as Buford, so the role went to Bo Svenson, who doesn't possess the acting skill required for a deodorant commercial, and who once again delivers a typically rotten performance. He is so bad in his role as the sheriff that one almost cheers for the villains, in the hope that someone will get this clown off the screen, and rescue viewers from further boredom. In fact, ... Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.

Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > VHS > Crime
starring: Alain Delon, François Périer, Nathalie Delon, Cathy Rosier, Jacques Leroy
directed by: Jean-Pierre Melville

May 16, 2000
This film has the indelible reputation of being a classic French film Noir; as being the inspiration for John Woo's THE KILLER, and Jim Jarmusch's GHOST DOG, and certainly influenced Jean Reno in THE PROFESSIONAL. It, in turn, was most certainly influenced by Alan Ladd's premiere role as "Raven" in THIS GUN FOR HIRE. Director Jean-Pierre Melville was a veteran of several French crime films. This one was easily his best. He died six years later. It was released in America in 1972 under the title, THE GODSON.

This is a very dark tale of a meticulous assassin living very secluded and alone in a rundown apartment house; inconspicuous, hiding in plain sight, a Spartan existance, a monk's simplicity and pure dedication to vocational choice. There is only one spark ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > VHS > Crime
starring: Humphrey Bogart, José Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray, Robert Francis
directed by: Edward Dmytryk

January 05, 1999
The crew of the USS Caine resents Captain Queeg, who places the blame for a series of blunders and petty infractions on the crew. Such instances include cutting their own target tow-line while Queeg berates a crewman for having his shirt untucked, and later and most famously, interrogating the officers for the apparent stealing of some strawberries.

The mutiny results when, in a life-threatening storm, Queeg freezes up and does not give the order that would save the ship. At that point he is relieved of command by Van Johnson.

Later at the court-marshall Johnson is defended by Mel Ferrer and prosecuted by EG Marshall. But was Queeg torpedoed by the crew with insubordination and lack of respect, or did Queeg go off the deep end? Queeg's paranoia comes out in full ... Read More:
