. In the Wild:Lemurs With John C
City Travel Guides > VHS > Nature and Wildlife
from: Warner
September 14, 1999
This would be indistinguishable from any random episode of "Nova" or "Nature" without the stardust sprinkled over the proceedings by the elfin Academy Award [registered trademark!] winner who - as it happened - was the only reason I sought this out in the first place. Consequently, I think I may have learned more about "actress hollywoodus" than "felidae acinonyx". Ms. Hunter shamelessly twinkles, dramatizes, flirts, and broods - effortlessly capturing the center of attention, whatever the situation. In a word: she's a star - even in the incongruous setting of Africa, whose film associations provide her with one wisecrack that made me burst out laughing. Having spent the night sleeping on open ground in ... Read More:

. Crocodile Hunter
City Travel Guides > VHS > Nature and Wildlife
starring: Steve Irwin (II), Terri Irwin
May 20, 2003
It's a shame that this particular episode didn't make a DVD, because this is one of the most incredible rescues that Australia Zoo has ever undertaken, surpassing even the Bunya Rescue (unfortunately not available for home purchase.) This episode truly exemplifies what Steve Irwin & the Australia Zoo team will go through, in order to save the lives of the wildlife they value so highly. You get a somewhat deeper insight into the working of the Zoo -- an advance team led by Zoo Director Wes Mannion was sent in; he was aided by Head Croc Keeper Brian Coulter. Even before the camera crews arrived, these men were working to find the supplies necessary to build two croc enclosures in war torn East Timor. When Steve arrives, ... Read More:

. National Geographic:African Wi
City Travel Guides > VHS > Nature and Wildlife
from: Warner
October 28, 1997
There is no world-famous footage here, no ligntning-flash illumination of animal behavior that we haven't seen in other tapes, and yet... it's so beautifully filmed and so many popular species are covered as they go through birth, mating and death that this tape should be brought as an introduction before others that might have classic footage but are more narrow in scope. If you have only one African wildlife video, this should probably be it. Look for the lion who's just lost the girl to his buddy - and is so put out that he ignores another lioness who saunters up and swats him across the face, as if she's saying "hey, stupid!" As with many other wildlife tapes, you may want to review this one before letting the younger kids watch.

. National Geo.:Among the Wild C
City Travel Guides > VHS > Nature and Wildlife
from: Warner
April 10, 1997
With the possible exception of "The Sharks", this is the most famous of all the National Geographic nature documentaries. Jane Goodall has spent most of her life studying the chimpanzees, and here she shares what she has learned over the years about the behavior of a particular group of the primates. Touching, heartbreaking and frightening at times, the video's greatest moment may be when we see the chimps getting a meal of termites with...a tool. By the end, you'll feel as if you know many of the chimps. Quite an experience.
