City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid
.The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid
City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Cliff Robertson, Robert Duvall, Luke Askew, R.G. Armstrong, Dana Elcar
directed by: Philip Kaufman

March 01, 1992
While not historically accurate, this is the most under-rated westwern I have seen. Robert Duval makes a convincing Jesse James with his evangelical outbursts and psychopathic behavior.Cliff Robertson plays the sly, yet introspective, charming ladies man as Cole Younger. The soundtrack and narrative couldn't be better. This is one very entertaining movie, with Duval and Robertson at their best.

City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Burt Lancaster, Shelley Winters, Telly Savalas, Ossie Davis, Dabney Coleman
directed by: Sydney Pollack

September 01, 1998
This was the movie that made me throw away my Maltin Reviews.

I've always been a huge admirer of Burt Lancaster & his work & in my book this is one of his very best; it may just be his best, but how can you beat Crimson Pirate or Vera Cruz or Sweet Smell of Success or even his first - The Killers? The man was endowed with very high doses of intelligence, humor, humanity, physical presence & and a sort of 19th century stage hamminess. There used to be a saying that you could tell the type of film Lancaster was doing by his hairdo. When the hair was short, the movie was serious. When it was wavy, his tongue was filling up his cheek. It's quite wavy in Scalphunters. He's the epitome of the mountain man / trapper in this ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Son of the Morning Star
.Son of the Morning Star
City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Gary Cole, Rosanna Arquette, Stanley Anderson, Edward Blatchford, George Dickerson
directed by: Mike Robe

January 01, 1998
The purpose of "Son of the Morning Star," both the book and the miniseries, was to show that George A. Custer is not just a symbol, good or bad, for culural/political causes, but a human being with flaws and attributes. A previous review is a perfect example of the failure to see Custer as anything but as a symbol. To some people, Custer is the embodiment of the evils of Manifest Destiny. It's an ironic fate for someone who died in the most spectacular, albeit temporary, setback for Manifest Destiny.

Custer is a fascinating historical figure because of his symbolism. So many people have such strong feelings about him for what he represents, but so few people really know anything about him. Born the son of blacksmith in ... Read More:

I hate the way people look at a black and white classic film and automatically think that the movie has to be bad. People only see the poor special effects and the absense of color but never judge a book by it's cover. " Union Pacific " is has a great western backed by a terrific director, great actors, and a large scale plot. Definently a great movie and a true classic.

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Tombstone
.Tombstone
City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe
directed by: George P. Cosmatos

July 01, 2003

Based on the true circumstances during and shortly after the Earp brothers' stay at Tombstone and their battle with a ruthless group known as the Cowboys, this film delivers on many levels. The characterizations are great, and Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is by far the most realistic interpretation of the man to date. Doc was depicted as a gruesome and deceptive killer by the Cowboys, but on all unbiased accounts Doc was depicted as a likeable Southern gentleman who was very well read, witty and fearless, and who had a liking for dark humour (which some folk misinterpreted.) Holliday killed only in self-defence, and was not afraid to take a stand or to get himself dirty out of compassion for a friend or a stranger. Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday is ... Read More:

Wow, how can you not love Clint Eastwood's singing? This movie is fun and hilarious. A little action and a lot of laughter. The characters are witty and the plot is creative. I would recomend this movie to anyone, unless you don't agree with drinking, smoking and gambling. Just watch the movie and enjoy.

City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Tony Randall, Barbara Eden, Arthur O'Connell, John Ericson, Noah Beery Jr.
directed by: George Pal

February 05, 2002
"Mike, the whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand - every time you stop and think, 'I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!' - every time such a thing happens, Mike, you are part of the Circus of Dr. Lao." I am so glad another fine reviewer quoted this immortal passage, and I will begin with the same, for it has informed much of my life!)

My friend Carlo mentioned to me that this fine film was playing at my local library recently and I had to pause and hold back my shock - I have not yet gotten over Tony's passing, and now I was confronted by so much lost time. Was it really forty years ago that Tony Randall stepped out of the shadow of his ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Lonely Are the Brave
.Lonely Are the Brave
City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau, Michael Kane (III), Carroll O'Connor
directed by: David Miller

March 01, 1992
I grew up in N.M., where the story takes place (Albuquerque), and my dad took me to the Route 66 Old Town Bridge where we watched the filming of Kirk crossing the Rio Grande on horseback. At that time, it was just neat to see a movie star.
I didn't truly appreciate the film until I grew up. Now, I see in it an individual very much like cowboys who were around in my childhood; fiercely independent, hard-drinking, hard-working men who, because of their disdain for fences, rules, and conformity, are themselves responsible for being alone. They are men who were born too late, who are old fashioned cowboys in a West where round-ups are now by helicoptor and ATR vehicles. A man on horseback, as a way of life, is rapidly fading away. You can see that sadness and loneliness in this film. That the hero in ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted VHS : Silverado
.Silverado
City Travel Guides > VHS > Westerns
starring: Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Marvin J. McIntyre
directed by: Lawrence Kasdan

January 27, 2004
I'm not a fan of westerns but "Silverado" was a good one. It had a lot of action and it never became boring. A good movie to me is something I can watch over and over and not get bored I wouldn't mind watching it again. "Silverado" in my opinion had something unique to it, it had an African American and it had someone funny in it too. Not all westerns had a cowboy that was funny, they where all serious and I think that more western movies should be like "Silverado" in some way. Jake ( Kevin Costner ) was my favorite character and my favorite quote was said bye him too! "All I did was kiss a girl" I like this quote because he said it funny and it's the reason why he got in trouble. Well the sound track in the film was in my opinion to dramatic, but it wasn't to bad it fit into the movie perfect but they should ... Read More:
