. Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Paul Newman, Joel Grey, Kevin McCarthy, Harvey Keitel, Allan F. Nichollsdirected by: Robert Altman
September 01, 1998
This is a quirky take on white/native relations in the late 19th/early 20th century, a mad mix of historical fact and whimsical fiction. Newman is masterful as the addled demagogue into which Buffalo Bill has morphed. I recommend this film for students enrolled in our college's AMERICAN WEST class; it is provocative fodder for good discussion, good writing on alternative views of history. Robert Altman fans will recognize stock characters from his other films, but will be entertained (perhaps delighted) throughout.

. The Outlaw
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Jack Buetel, Jane Russell, Thomas Mitchell, Walter Huston, Mimi Agugliadirected by: Howard Hawks, Howard Hughes
June 25, 2002
This was the famous Howard Hughes's attempt to break into Hollywood. He's the guy who built The Hughes Took Company into an empire, flew air racers, built the "Spruce Goose", Hughes Air West, and a bunch of other accomplishments. He died a recluse who was obsessed with germs. He was the stuff that fables are made of. Jane Russell was one of his accomplishments. The movie took seven years, they say, to be released--after it was completed. Hughes directed it. The male lead, Jack Beutel, who played Billy the Kid, was under contract to Hughes, where he languished. Hughes paid him, month after month, but never used him in any other film. He is somewhat reminiscent, in looks, of Audey Murphy (the most decorated ... Read More:

. Houston: The Legend of Texas
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Katharine Ross, Sam Elliott, John de Lancie, G.D. Spradlin, James Stephensdirected by: Peter Levin
January 01, 1998
I have never been much of a history buff, but lately Texas History has become a passion of mine. I thought this movie had some outstanding acting (with the exception of Sam Houston's part Cherokee wife) and told a story that you rarely get to see in such honesty. Watching previous accounts of the battle at the Alamo between Santa Ana and General Travis...one might be led to believe that Houston was a coward for not going to go help them fight. But watching this movie, and reading more about what he did, you understand his reasons for refusing..and you find a new found respect for the man. Well, at least I did. Very well done and very informative! I give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up!

. Hour of the Gun
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: James Garner, Jason Robards, Robert Ryan, Albert Salmi, Charles Aidmandirected by: John Sturges
September 01, 1998
Until the release of Costner's Wyatt Earp and Russell's Tombstone, this was probably the most realistic and unglamorized retelling of the Earp/Clanton feud. The casting is solid with James Garner as a conflicted Earp, and Jason Robards fairly steals the film as Doc Holiday. It purports to tell the story "the way it happened", but there are a lot of inaccuracies that Earp historians can spot. The opening OK corral shootout was played as it was, quick and dirty. There are major errors in the later story such as Earp killing Clanton in a final showdown (never happened), and the showdowns with various Clanton henchmen by in large did not happen the way it was portryed here. Doc is portrayed as being a northerner and much older than the young southerner which ... Read More:

. Last Command
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Sterling Hayden, Anna Maria Alberghetti, Richard Carlson, Arthur Hunnicutt, Ernest Borgninedirected by: Frank Lloyd
July 01, 2001
I'm sure other reviewers will send me nasty e-mails about this one, but frankly I don't care. (I delete them anyway) This movie is a major snooze fest until the final battle. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. I was cheering on the Mexican troops when they stormed the Alamo so they'd make the silly dialog STOP! Sterling Hayden is probably the most wooden portrayal of James Bowie on the screen. You'll probably ask yourself, "Why do his men support him?" Even more laughable is Anna Maria Alberghetti as Bowie's love interest. He's old enough to be her father, and yet she clings to him like a puppy. The historical Bowie was a man you either feared and hated, or were loyal to, to the end. The other characters are just as bad. Arthur Hunnicutt is at his corn pone worst as ... Read More:

. Ned Kelly
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Mick Jagger, Clarissa Kaye-Mason, Mark McManus, Ken Goodlet, Frank Thringdirected by: Tony Richardson
September 01, 1998
as a straight forward attempt to tell Kelly's story it succeeds. but Jagger, sadly, is Mick Jagger, not Edward Kelly. Unartistic as a film, it nevertheless tells a great story quite well, and i must confess, whenit first came out (1970) it started me on a Kelly quest that has lasted ever since. So BRAVO for Tony Richardson's attmept....and I like Mick and found SOME of his work here "ok"...but if you watch a movie on Kelly and can only see Mick Jagger, then the casting director should be fired!!

. Tom Horn
City Travel Guides > VHS > Biography
starring: Steve McQueen, Linda Evans, Richard Farnsworth, Billy Green Bush, Slim Pickensdirected by: William Wiard
June 04, 1996
A classic western and one Steve McQueen's greatest roles, Tom Horn is a must for any serious western movie library. The movie tracks Horn's tracks from the Southwest into Wyoming and a career as a "stock detective." The career begins promisingly enough but soon takes a downward turn as Horn, the simple cowboy and tracker, runs head on into big business politics and scandals that jeopardize not only his freedom but his life. The cast also includes Linda Evans (Dynasty) and Richard Farnsworth (The Grey Fox). As a result of viewing this movie I was also lead to an excellent biography: Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon: The Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective by Chip Carlson and Larry D. Ball. Once you see the movie you'll want to read the book.
