With the help of Frenchy (Marlene Dietrich) a dance hall girl from New Orleans, local ranchers in the town of Bottleneck are being swindled out of there land by the unscrupulous saloon owner Kent (Brian Donlevy).

. High Noon
City Travel Guides > VHS > Classics
starring: Gary Cooper, Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado, Grace Kellydirected by: Fred Zinnemann
February 22, 2000
This is probably one of the greatest, if not THE greatest western ever made. For some reason, when the name is mentioned, people always think John Wayne starred in this spectacular film. Not so. Gary Cooper, who was perfectly suited for the role, is a model actor who gets beneath the surface of the character to give us a multi-faceted sherrif.
Now, while most B-westerns (and this is not one) lack for plot, "High Noon" does not. It's right up there with "Western Union" and "Red River" as far as this is concerned and you'll find yourself appaled at how fickle human beings can be, especially in a time of crisis.
For me, this movie was really symbolic of desertion in many forms. One word, it is not an uplifting movie. I was blow away the first ... Read More:

. Zorro Rides Again
City Travel Guides > VHS > Classics
starring: John Carroll, Helen Christian, Reed Howes, Duncan Renaldo, Noah Beerydirected by: William Witney, John English
November 24, 1998
This is one of the standard action serials - no plot, no acting skills, and no budget. If you want that, then go ahead and buy this. The copy I have was promoted (on the box) as the original story of zorro, and as a 1960's TV classic.

Republic Pictures presents "THE BOLD CABALLERO" (1 December 1936) (67 mins/B&W/Color) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) --- Bob Livingston starred in several serials, "THE VIGILANTES ARE COMING" (Republic, 1936) and "THE LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN" (Republic, 1939) --- Livingston also had the distinction of starring in Republic's first color film, "THE BOLD CABALLERO" (Republic, 1936) --- During the 1920s Doug Fairbanks had brought to life on the screen the great Spanish crusader, ZORRO --- This classic silent feature broke box-office records when it was shown.
It was Nat Levine who got the idea of resurrecting this black masked hero once again on the silver screen --- Owning the screen rights to the ZORRO character, Republic Pictures great script ... Read More:

. Stone/Silver Creek
City Travel Guides > VHS > Classics
starring: Buck Jones, Noel Francis, Niles Welch, Marion Shilling, Peggy Campbelldirected by: Nick Grinde
January 06, 1998
This is a good Buck Jones movie that was geared more to adults that the kids whom frequented B-Westerns of the 30's and 40's by the millions. It's a play on morality and is deprived of a lot of the action sequences normally associated with B-Westerns. Kids may have found this one boring back in the mid 30's. It has good acting and a well written script and story line but darn do I miss the action. Buck's wearing a smaller hat with a different crease that I'm nomally used to in this one and for the first time ever uses two derringers to chase a couple of heavies off in one scene and wears a suit with bowtie throughout the whole movie instead of his horseshoed lace up shirt. Overall though I enjoyed it and it's a great morality play on good versus evil.

. The Searchers
City Travel Guides > VHS > Classics
starring: John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, Natalie Wooddirected by: John Ford
May 30, 2000
This film, directed by the legendary John Ford, and starring John Wayne in the leading role is a western that has achieved mythic proportions. Touted as one of the greatest westerns ever filmed, it is, I will grant you, an entertaining film. In it, John Wayne plays the anti-hero, Ethan Edwards, an ex-confederate soldier, who goes to Texas in 1868 to visit his brother and his family on their ranch in Texas. While visiting, a report of marauding Indians in adjacent land draws out the Texas Rangers and Ethan, who joins them. When they discover that a decoy has been used to lure them away from the settlement, they hurry back, only to find that Ethan's family was masacred and his two nieces gone, taken captive by Comanche Indians.
Ethan goes to the rescue, joined ... Read More:

. High Plains Drifter (Widescreen)
City Travel Guides > VHS > Classics
starring: Clint Eastwood, Verna Bloom, Marianna Hill, Mitch Ryan, Jack Gingdirected by: Clint Eastwood
October 29, 2002
I think the problem here is that I watched the "Dollars" trilogy before High Plains Drifter. In my humble opinion Drifter doesn't stand up to those movies.
The story lacks clarity, or at least it did to me, and is a bit weak. I didn't realize that Eastwood's character is a ghost of sorts who is out to avenge the death of a lawman until the end of the film. At any rate, the stranger's "screwing" with the pathetic inhabitants of Lago gets old quick and rape at the beginning of the film left a bad taste in my mouth.
However, my biggest problem with this movie is the town itself. It looks so fake! It's fresh appearance makes it seem as though it was built a day before the shooting of the film commenced.
Some good cinematography in this one, very crisp. ... Read More:
