. Rio Grande
City Travel Guides > VHS > Western Stars
starring: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Ben Johnson, Claude Jarman Jr., Harry Carey Jr.directed by: John Ford
November 24, 1998
RIO GRANDE nicely finishes off the John Ford Cavalry Trilogy. While not as intense as FORT APACHE, or touching as SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, RIO GRANDE earns its stripes with the trademarks of the trilogy: luminous direction, straight forward story telling and solid work from The Duke, Maureen O'Hara and of course, Victor McLaglen, who steels the first 20 minutes of the film. "Welcome home, darling," he bows to O'Hara as she's escorted into the fort by The Duke, to which she replies: "I see you still have that ox with you." Pappy and The Duke have the regular Ford/Wayne troop still with them and it works. The Sons of the Pioneers offer a new song book, but the band still plays "The Girl I Left Behind Me" when the ... . Clint Eastwood Gift Set
City Travel Guides > VHS > Western Stars
starring: Clint Eastwood, Geraldine Page, Elizabeth Hartman, Jo Ann Harris, Darleen Carrdirected by: Don Siegel
September 17, 2002
I can't quite decipher the complaints about this set. Some of Eastwood's greatest movies are collected here, or at least some of his most interesting. "In the Line of Fire" and "Dirty Harry" are considered classics of their kind. "Bronco Billy" is an oddity, sure, but one of Eastwood's most unusal, and sweetest, films. "The Beguiled" is a fascinating Gothic mood piece, almost a Tennessee Williams exercise about sexual repression and jealousy, set in a most unlikely time and place. "Unforgiven" is one of a tiny handful of truly great American films released during the past 15 years, and perhaps the most potent examination of violence since "The Wild Bunch." And "The Outlaw - Josey Wales" may just be Eastwood's best film. It's got an epic sweep, wonderful ... Read More:

. They Came to Cordura
City Travel Guides > VHS > Western Stars
starring: Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin, Tab Hunter, Richard Contedirected by: Robert Rossen
September 29, 1997
THEY CAME TO CORDURA was originally 148 minutes. It was hailed by critics who saw this version, including the NY Times, which gave it a rave. But Columbia grew nervous, it was dark, grim, downbeat. The army looked like it was filled with cowards, rapists, murderers. Columbia took the film away from director Robert Rossen and lopped off 35 minutes, then added back in several minutes of exposition. The resulting film is maddening. At times brilliant, at times clumsy; it's pacing is awkward, the editing downright amateurish. The minions at Comubia hadn't a clue what they were doing whgen they butchered and re-editied the film. Even so, it is still a fine, fine film. The writing is spot-on, some of the dialogue scalding; the acting is flawless, and many of the sequences ... Read More:

February 04, 2003
at the time i watched this movie,i hadn't been very interested in
Western movies.but because this one was directed by Clint Eastwood and
had a star studded cast,i decided to give it a try.boy,i'm glad i did.i
really enjoyed the movie.Eastwood also stars in the movie, along with
Morgan freeman,Gene Hackman,Richard Harris and Saul Rubinek,to name
just a few.each of these A one actors are at the top of their game
here.Eastwood crafts a gritty, dark version of the old west during a
harsh and unforgiving time.the movie is brutally violent and
unflinching in its portrayal of the time.some may find it
depressing, and it does have that air to it,but i wasn't bothered by
that aspect of it.i got caught up in the story and action.i ... Read More:
