.Covered Wagon City Travel Guides > VHS > Silent starring: J. Warren Kerrigan, Lois Wilson, Alan Hale, Ernest Torrence, Tully Marshall directed by: James Cruze May 02, 2000 It's refreshing to see this well-loved, simple classic in such good condition. The VHS print is excellent, the film itself is only slightly dated, and the actors don't ham too much (Ernest Torrence and J Warren Kerrigan are stand-outs). The direction by James Cruze is solid. His use of close-ups is sparing, but effective. The storyline began to wander a bit after the wagon-train had crossed the Platte, but the final 10 minutes puts things to right again. .The Mark of Zorro City Travel Guides > VHS > Silent starring: Marguerite De La Motte, Robert McKim, Noah Beery, Charles Hill Mailes, Claire McDowell directed by: Fred Niblo June 27, 2000 The only silent film I have enjoyed as much as I enjoy the best of modern film is Buster Keaton's The General, but Douglas Fiarbanks' The Mark of Zorro holds up better than most silents. The original music by Jon C. Mirsalis adds a lot. Nilsson, Joseph Singleton, Jack Richardson, Richard Headrick directed by: Lambert Hillyer June 27, 2000 Although I've never been a fan of Westerns, I'm glad I decided to get this great DVD because when it comes right down to it, the story and its message are what counts, regardless of the genre. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Toll Gate" for it's theme of the outlaw who isn't all that bad after all, tries to prove it and reaps the rewards. Right from the start, you already feel sympathetic towards the leader of the outlaw gang, and there's considerable suspense as the story unfolds, making you want to cheer him on to a happy outcome. It's a good storyline and it is presented quite well, but it's a shame that some parts of the film, notably the last 10-15 minutes are in rather bad condition.
