. Clint Eastwood Gift Set
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Clint Eastwood, Geraldine Page, Elizabeth Hartman, Jo Ann Harris, Darleen Carrdirected by: Don Siegel
September 17, 2002
I can't quite decipher the complaints about this set. Some of Eastwood's greatest movies are collected here, or at least some of his most interesting. "In the Line of Fire" and "Dirty Harry" are considered classics of their kind. "Bronco Billy" is an oddity, sure, but one of Eastwood's most unusal, and sweetest, films. "The Beguiled" is a fascinating Gothic mood piece, almost a Tennessee Williams exercise about sexual repression and jealousy, set in a most unlikely time and place. "Unforgiven" is one of a tiny handful of truly great American films released during the past 15 years, and perhaps the most potent examination of violence since "The Wild Bunch." And "The Outlaw - Josey Wales" may just be Eastwood's best film. It's got an epic ... Read More:

. Wild Things
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Theresa Russell, Denise Richardsdirected by: John McNaughton
January 30, 2001
Wild Things is a well crafted.suspense/murder mystery/crime drama.it
should keep you guessing to the end.there are many twists and
turns, perhaps too many.if you like your stories linear, this movie is
not for you.it is very convoluted, but does pay off in the end.there are
some big names in this movie, and the acting is pretty decent, but the
story is the focus in this movie, and not so much on the actors.there is
some nudity in the film, which is not really necessary to the story, but
i guess the filmmakers wanted to make sure they covered all their
bases.the movie also has a fair bit of foul language, which may turn
some viewers off.the choice of music for the film is very appropriate
and really ... Read More:

. Aladdin
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
September 29, 1993
There are a select few of the films made by Disney that can almost be considered essential Kid fare. My personal faves are : Robin Hood, Lion King, and the great Aladdin. This is one of Disney's all time greatest moments ever. This is truly one of the best. Adults will find it amazing, kids will love it! An awesome and incredible tale of magic, wishes, coming of age, love, and temptation by absolute power. Wonderful, simply wonderful. Also was one of the first animated movies to really make use of a seamless blend of computer graphics and traditional animation styles. Perfect.

. Plunkett & Macleane
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Jonny Lee Miller, Iain Robertson, Robert Carlyle, Ken Stott, Tommy Flanagandirected by: Jake Scott (II)
August 01, 2000
There is real plot in this film, it just follows two bumbling theives. Actually the two actors are the only aspect that make this movie watchable, just barely however. The self-concious humour ends up being incredibly pretentious, it even seems to revel in the fact that it is pretentious, and somehow that makes the movie selfaware and hip. Some people might leap to this films defense and claim that the forgetable plot was part of the grand scheme to keep it fun and exciting. The problem is asides from the an uninvolving plot, this movie is extremely predictable, which further deminishes the already trite affair.

. The Lion King
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Rowan Atkinson, Matthew Broderick, Niketa Calame, Jim Cummings, Whoopi Goldbergdirected by: Rob Minkoff, Roger Allers
March 03, 1995
This is a great movie, and the DVD video quality is excellent. However, Disney has remixed the soundtrack, and has left it very thin.
The introduction sequence is a spectacular extravaganza of animation, and is a classic presentation, however the original VHS audio was superior.
I thought perhaps I was imagining the low quality, so I plugged in my VHS version.
The waterfall can be heard rumbling in the VHS track, but is almost absent on the DVD.
The Elephant footprints come down with such force on the original that you are nearly vibrated off your seat, again on the DVD they are less than impressive.
Finally the finale - the powerful concluding thud on the drum that vibrates the walls and echos for several seconds. The VHS track leaves ... Read More:

. Indiana Jones Gift Set (3 VHS Boxed Set: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade)
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Denholm Elliott, Alison Doody, John Rhys-Daviesdirected by: Steven Spielberg
January 06, 2004
How can one not love Indiana Jones? The guy is brilliant, tough, not afraid to get his hands dirty, he doesn't mind shooting the bad guy rather than just delivering him to justice and he's a hit with the ladies. I liked the Indiana Jones movies when I was a kid, but you really can't appreciate how good they are until you've had about a decade or so of real movie watching; I mean after giving up the cartoons. Each story just gets better; Raiders of the Lost Ark is great, but a little slow, The Temple of Doom is even better than Raiders and The Last Crusade - well, Sean Connery is in it, what more do I need to say? If you're even a bit of a movie buff and liked these films as a kid, buy them and watch them. When your kids are old enough to watch this trilogy, make them ... Read More:

. Class of 1999
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Bradley Gregg, Traci Lind, Malcolm McDowell, Stacy Keach, Patrick Kilpatrickdirected by: Mark L. Lester
September 16, 1992
Class of 1999 is one of those movies that is so terrible you HAVE to watch until the end just to see how bad it can actually get. It takes place in, you guess it 1999. The film was made in 1990 when people thought 1999 would be like living on the moon. Gangbangers control the schools and the neighborhoods. That's when the reality buttons popped on for me. You have these super tough gangmembers that carry guns everywhere yet they STILL go to school? Would they go to school? Also, the school is such a dangerous place that armed guards frisk the students and relieve them of their weapons every morning. I was like " Duh! ". The so-called gangmembers are so wimpy and wussy you'd think they were " Leave it to Beaver " rejects. That's just one of the many unrealistic points of this film. ... Read More:

. Caine Mutiny, the >
City Travel Guides > VHS > Action and Adventure
starring: Humphrey Bogart, José Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray, Robert Francisdirected by: Edward Dmytryk
January 05, 1999
The crew of the USS Caine resents Captain Queeg, who places the blame for a series of blunders and petty infractions on the crew. Such instances include cutting their own target tow-line while Queeg berates a crewman for having his shirt untucked, and later and most famously, interrogating the officers for the apparent stealing of some strawberries. The mutiny results when, in a life-threatening storm, Queeg freezes up and does not give the order that would save the ship. At that point he is relieved of command by Van Johnson. Later at the court-marshall Johnson is defended by Mel Ferrer and prosecuted by EG Marshall. But was Queeg torpedoed by the crew with insubordination and lack of respect, or did Queeg go off the deep end? Queeg's paranoia comes out in full ... Read More:
