I first saw this film in 1970 when I was a college student. In 2004, it retains its relevance to me as an Amercian. A few years after this film was released, the CIA intervened in Chile when they assisted in the overthrow of a democratically-elected Communist president. Sometime before that the U.S. government had enabled the Shah of Iran to come to power in that country. In the 1980s, the U.S. supported insurgents against another democratically-elected Communist in Central America. Now the U.S. has militarily overthrown the leader of Iraq, is maintaining an occupation force in that nation, and is seeking to establish a new government there. So this movie -- which was about a 1962 military coup in Greece -- has significant meaning for Americans. ... Read More:

Based on a play, Hotel Paradiso is a classic, light-hearted, and absolutely delightful French farce set in turn-of-the-century Paris. The actual storyline is very basic (ie. a married man seeking an evening of romance with a married woman); indeed, it must be basic to possibly allow for the complexity of the situations in which the characters find themselves and each other, the misinterpretations, and the elaborate (and comical) explanations that result. Never was the phrase, "Oh what a tangled web we weave" more appropriate than when applied here. There are two things that really make this production shine, however. First of all, there are no loose ends. Not only does every character have a role to play, but every single incident ... Read More:

. Fawlty Towers-Hotel Inspe
City Travel Guides > VHS > Art House and International
starring: John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth, Andrew Sachs (II), Ballard Berkeleydirected by: Bob Spiers, John Howard Davies
January 01, 1998
John Cleese once remarked that he did as much with "Fawlty Towers" in 12 episodes than Lucille Ball did in several years of "I Love Lucy". When I first heard that, I thought Cleese was being as crass as Basil Fawlty. But you know something? He came darn close. This volume of "Fawlty Towers" contains three of the best episodes, and it is the one tape out of the four-tape collection that I play the most. "Hotel Inspectors" shows Basil at his most fawning, his most insincere. Ditto for "A Touch Of Class". But the real show-stealer is "Germans", perhaps the single most funny half-hour in sitcom history. Most people speak about the famous scene where Basil goose-steps around his German patrons, ... John Cleese once remarked that he did as much with "Fawlty Towers" in 12 episodes than Lucille Ball did in several years of "I Love Lucy". When I first heard that, I thought Cleese was being as crass as Basil Fawlty. But you know something? He came darn close. Fawlty Towers, Volume Two, contains the episodes "Builders", "Wedding Party", and "Psychiatrist". My God, what a triple play. If comedy is the pleasure we take in watching other people's sufferings, then John Cleese wrote nothing but perfect comic scripts. "Builders" centers on Basil's constant efforts to save money which, of course, leads to constant frustration with the bumblers he winds up hiring. "Wedding Party" and "Psychiatrist" are ... . Zombie
City Travel Guides > VHS > Art House and International
starring: Lucio Fulci, Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson, Al Cliverdirected by: Lucio Fulci
February 17, 1998
I enjoy watching zombie movies and I'd heard a lot about this one before I managed to get my hands on a copy. Some people had told me it was a classic of low budget filmmaking, others had warned me it was an absolute steaming pile of zombie pap. Now, having finally watched it, I don't think it's either of these things.
The acting is bland in general, with the exception of veteran British actor Richard Johnson (looking a bit out of place, but having a great time hamming it up as the slightly mad Dr. Menard) and smirky Roger Moore look-alike Ian McCulloch. Al Cliver isn't too bad as a tough-guy tourist caught up in the zombie infestation, Tisa Farrow (yes, that's Mia's little sis) drifts through much of the movie looking distant and dazed, and Auretta Gay (they must have given her ...
