City Travel Guides > VHS > Drama
starring: Peter Glenville, Gina Lollobrigida, Alec Guinness, Robert Morley, Peggy Mountdirected by: Peter Glenville
December 11, 2007
Based on a play, Hotel Paradiso is a classic, light-hearted, and absolutely delightful French farce set in turn-of-the-century Paris. The actual storyline is very basic (ie. a married man seeking an evening of romance with a married woman); indeed, it must be basic to possibly allow for the complexity of the situations in which the characters find themselves and each other, the misinterpretations, and the elaborate (and comical) explanations that result. Never was the phrase, "Oh what a tangled web we weave" more appropriate than when applied here. There are two things that really make this production shine, however. First of all, there are no loose ends. Not only does every character have a role to play, but every single ... Read More:

. Mary Poppins
City Travel Guides > VHS > Drama
August 26, 1997
This is one of those films that has stood the test of time and is still entertaining now as it was 40 years ago. Everyone knows the tale of the magical nanny that blows in on the east wind and into the lives of the Banks family of 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Jane and Michael Banks have had a succession of strict nannies as well as a very strict father and a mother who is always out with her fellow suffragettes. Mary Poppins brings magic and fun into the children's lives, something that has been sorely lacking prior to her arrival.
Julie Andrews stars as the nanny and Dick Van Dyke as the lovable cockney Bert, (just forgive his dreadful accent) who always seems to be around at the right time for an adventure. The children find themselves having outings such as ... Read More:

. Sound of Music
City Travel Guides > VHS > Drama
from: Fox Video
October 14, 2003
Some movie musicals have aged better than others. THE SOUND OF MUSIC is not one of these. The fault lies in the music; not so much the melodies composed by the great Richard Rodgers, but rather the unpoetic treacle served up by Oscar Hammerstein as lyrics. In fact, all the other film versions of Rodgers and Hammerstein productions (The King and I, South Pacific, Oklahoma!) have dated rather badly for the same reason. All huge blockbusters when they were released, they all seem to suffer from a surfeit of lyrical over sentimentality when viewed today. On the other hand, more modest musical productions have retained their freshness due in large part of their superior musical qualities. Before he teamed up with Hammerstein, Rodgers had forged a partnership with the ... Read More:

. From Here to Eternity
City Travel Guides > VHS > Drama
starring: Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, Frank Sinatradirected by: Fred Zinnemann
October 23, 2001
The Godfather got Sinatra the part of Maggio, but I think the producer was right; Sinatra stinks in that part. Talk about over acting; Sinatra has no subtlety at all. Now Lancaster is terrific, a soldier's soldier and Deborah Kerr slips into the part of a lonely wife of a louse effortlessly. The script of the James Jones book is a mess. The Lancaster-Kerr romance works almost, but the Cliff-Donna Reed love story is hurried and unbelievable. She's a dance hostess my a**. The mores of the 1950's did this interesting story wrong. These people are seething with sexuality, but somehow, Hollywood squeezed the juice out of em.

. Caine Mutiny, the >
City Travel Guides > VHS > Drama
starring: Humphrey Bogart, José Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray, Robert Francisdirected by: Edward Dmytryk
January 05, 1999
The crew of the USS Caine resents Captain Queeg, who places the blame for a series of blunders and petty infractions on the crew. Such instances include cutting their own target tow-line while Queeg berates a crewman for having his shirt untucked, and later and most famously, interrogating the officers for the apparent stealing of some strawberries. The mutiny results when, in a life-threatening storm, Queeg freezes up and does not give the order that would save the ship. At that point he is relieved of command by Van Johnson. Later at the court-marshall Johnson is defended by Mel Ferrer and prosecuted by EG Marshall. But was Queeg torpedoed by the crew with insubordination and lack of respect, or did Queeg go off the deep end? Queeg's paranoia comes out in full force, complete ... Read More:
