. Not as a Stranger
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Olivia de Havilland, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, Gloria Grahame, Broderick Crawforddirected by: Stanley Kramer
"Not as a Stranger" was an unexpected pleasure once I got past the shock of seeing Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, and Lee Marvin (or his twin)as medical students staring down from tiered seating at a lecturing doctor. Oh, my, I thought, that is NOT a town in which to get sick! I was reeling from mis-casting shock for a number of minutes into the movie, but then Hollywood starting luring me into enjoyment of the performances of these actors cast against type. Bob Mitchum, the penniless son of a hopeless alcoholic (a very WELL-cast Lon Chaney, Jr., alas, in a sad role)wants to be a doctor more than any of his fellow colleagues, many of whom dream of big future salaries and big old 50's cars, in order to set the world right. This strikes me ... Read More:

starring: Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Wintersdirected by: Don Chaffey

I remember this movie from my childhood, so I bought it for my toddler. He loves it. My son points at the DVD case and grunts. He watches it everyday (for 2 weeks now). It must be the music and singing because the storyline is lackluster. Everytime he sees the dragon or hears a song he starts chattering away with his gibberish pre-talk. My preferred character is Doc Terminus - the con man / man of science. I give it 4 stars because I have watched it so many times the melodies are stuck in my head. I hope he gets a new "favorite" movie soon :)

. Goofy Movie, a
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Kevin Lima, Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, Kellie Martindirected by: Kevin Lima
July 14, 1998
I think that I love this movie more than my kids do!! I find myself singing along with the songs, and The story is very heartwarming. I relate to poor Max and his exasperation at some of his father's goofiness...I remember the days when I was mortified to be seen in public with my Parents!! I loved it so much I went out and got the sequel "An extremely Goofy movie" and I was so sad to see that it did not live up to the original...no catchy music!! The music in the first one is the best part!! I was very dissapointed. You will love this movie not only for the Music, but also for the lessons that it teaches your children about family. I have found a favorite for a lifetime!!

Get this movie for kids and adults. It's very funny and charming. The animation has the quality of a feature, not a direct-to-video. The cast is first rate: Hank Azaria, Kelsey Grammer, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara.

. Long Hot Summer

I rated this film with four stars though on most measurable levels, it is worthy of maybe three. The plot is a montage, some say mish-mash of Faulkner's literary works. Still, the film works..... most of the time. Jerry Wald's production has 1950's sensibilities written all over it. A real strength of this film lies in the charismatic on-screen performance of young Paul Newman's Ben Quick and his incendiary relationship with Orson Welles' Will Varner. It is said the editing room had to re-do much of Welles' dialogue to make it intelligible for the audience. Whatever. I am fascinated by virtually every word uttered in Welles' quirky interpretation of a portly, gravelly voiced redneck hell-bent to leave his greasy thumbprint on all who would come under ...
