. Beau Pere
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Patrick Dewaere, Ariel Besse, Maurice Ronet, Geneviève Mnich, Maurice Rischdirected by: Bertrand Blier
October 08, 2002
After the sudden death of his wife, Remy (Patrick Dewaere), is forced to take care of his 14-year-old stepdaughter (Ariel Besse) who, unbeknownst to him, has fallen in love with him. Ariel does a very nice acting job and is very pretty, but the nude scenes are lacking in both quantity and content. There is no frontal nudity of her and you get only a glimpse of her backside when walking to her room and also when sitting on the bed. I know that you not need nudity or sexual situations to tell a story but after seeing Ariel the movie leaves you wanting more.

. Imitation of Life 59
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, Robert Alda, Susan Kohnerdirected by: Douglas Sirk
January 29, 2002
I have to say that I prefer this version to the 1934 Claudette Colbert film. Not only is it beautifully and lushly photographed, but all the performances are outstanding, as is the music. The story of a struggling widow and aspiring actress trying to raise her young daughter, and the black woman she befriends and the two become close as the years pass and their daughters' problems begin to surface. Lana Turner, as Lora Meredith, is radiant and plays the mixture of glamorous star and a mother trying to be the best she can be, but only complicates matters further by her ambition and work. Juanita Moore is heart-breaking as Annie Johnson, a devoted friend and loving mother whose heart is shattered when her frustrated, hurt and rebellious ... Read More:

. Men of Respect
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: John Turturro, Katherine Borowitz, Dennis Farina, Peter Boyle, Lilia Skaladirected by: William Reilly
June 28, 1994
Men of Respect is an excellent movie. It has so many similarities and some differences to the play The Tragedy of Macbeth, written by Shakespeare. I would have to say the number one similarity of the two would be the characters' names. Such as Macbeth, in the movie Men of Respect, his characters' name is Michael Battaglia, and the similarity would be they have the same initials. Then there is Banquo who is Bankie Como, Macduff is Duffy, Lady Macbeth is Lady Battaglia, and so on. In the movie, as in the play, there are witches who give Macbeth and Michael prophesies. The only difference is that in the movie they are called fortunetellers. There are still three of them but instead of the three weird sisters it is a mom, pop, and son, and they are in a backroom ... . Sorry Wrong Number
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Ann Richards, Wendell Corey, Harold Vermilyeadirected by: Anatole Litvak
August 25, 1998
I'll never forget the first time I saw this movie. The quality I was most struck by was it's darkness. I was very young & didn't realise at the time that I was watching one of the best examples in the history of cinema of film noir(nightmare noir even).Darkness, darkness...even the scenes set during the day feel dark. Many of my fellow film lovers have already provided a synopsis so I won't bother you with yet another. Suffice to say this a superbly acted thriller with beautiful elements of melodrama & a knockout climax. I've seen Barbra Stanwyck & Burt Lancaster in SO many films, but this is the one I keep coming back to. Feel the darkness, enjoy the rain, live the nightmare...

. Double Indemnity
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Porter Hall, Jean Heatherdirected by: Billy Wilder
March 01, 1992
From the James M. Cain novel this is the finest film of its genre under the masterful of Billy Wilder and an absolute must-see for any devote of film noir. Barbara Stanwyck is at her peak as a lying, cheating, double-crossing blond tramp(who can ever forget her ankle bracelet?) who schemes with Fred Mac Murray to murder her husband for the most base reason - his insurance money. Edward G. Robinson is fine as the insurance investigator who goes by his hunch that there's more than meets the eye than just a simple suicide. With a brilliant script (the double entendres when Stanwyck fobs off the attentions of Mac Murray are a gem!) by Wilder and Raymond Chandler "Double Indemnity" is a spellbinding rollercoaster into a world of murder, lust and betrayal moodily set in 1944 ... . Devils, the
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Reed, Dudley Sutton, Max Adrian, Gemma Jonesdirected by: Ken Russell
September 25, 1991
This movie, partly based on The Devils Of Loudon, by Aldous Huxley [author of Brave New World, Brave New World Revisited, among others] features Oliver Reed, as an indiscreet priest, doing very unpriestly things with a young daughter of a nobleman, and Vanessa Redgrave as a demented nun. It centres [centers] around the "possession", supposedly, of a town, and the convent in Loudon, after the religious wars of the 1630s. Moderately acted, a few familiar faces appear in the movie (i.e., to viewers of British films and television); including Dudley Sutton [Tinker in the Lovejoy mysteries and John Woodvine, who appeared in the "Armageddon Factor" in the Dr. Who series]. After the Protestant/Catholic religious wars are over, a new priest, Reed, comes in and ... Read More:

. From Here to Eternity
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Natalie Wood, William Devane, Steve Railsback, Roy Thinnes, Joe Pantolianodirected by: Buzz Kulik
January 01, 1998
Natalie Wood Shines in 'From Here to Eternity'.................. I enjoyed this version more than the old 50's movie because the story in more in depth.....being 4 hours and 38 minutes long. ... there was a lot more time for character developement. Also it is a lot more sexual than the 50's movie. In this vertsion the prostitute, played by Kim Basinger, is a bit more slutty than Donna Reed's version. It's also the only movie I've liked William Devane in. He and Natalie Wood really heat up the screen and do some fabulous work together. Natalie Wood is brilliant in this TV movie. She is always so vulnerable and fascinating to watch. She has some really great scenes and sometimes breaks your heart. It's a wonderful tale of many lives converging on Hawaii that ... Read More:
