. Glory Daze
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Megan Ward, French Stewart, Vien Hongdirected by: Rich Wilkes
August 03, 1999
I find it both amusing and horrifying that legendary underground cinema star Brian Strauss -- who appears briefly in this film and upstages future screen star Ben Affleck and noted burnout Alyssa Milano -- made his final screen appearance (to date) in an uncredited, unrecognized cameo in this crappy film. (He is in the restaurant scene near the end, when Affleck stops to melodramatically deface the window.) Before becoming a Pynchon-esque recluse, Strauss graced avant cinema classics such as Do the Rice Thing, The Life and Tymes of Doo Doo Brown, Baxter the Killer Squirrel, and Watch Out!, just to name a few. Who could forget his emotionally tour de force in the later, as Cragmont the mentally handicapped groundskeeper? Or his oft-quoted "eat ... Read More:

. Whats Up Tiger Lily
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Woody Allen, Tatsuya Mihashi, Akiko Wakabayashi, Mie Hama, John Sebastiandirected by: Woody Allen
February 24, 1998
Along with the fictional "Interiors" this has to be Allen's most introspective, auto biographical work: a realistic portrait of the man behind the comedian, everything's here: starting from a difficult upbringing in Tijuana, México (where he met absurdist mexican painter Mateo Valdés Gutiérrez), the amazingly strange story of how Woody wears glasses just for the fun of it and up to his anonymous contributions to the Lingüistic Circle of Prague (where he started his stand up routine, not very succesfully). Maybe the most powerful image from this production is the moment when Allen breaks into tears listening to an old Ramones 8 track, driving his Porsche back to California or maybe when he transforms himself into a black jazz musician ... . Roots Vol IV
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS

I just had seen Roots saga on DVD. For me it's the first time I've seen it since 1977. I watched it within a day and came away from it moved and intrigued. Roots is a true classic and one of my favorite books. The miniseries is the best program I have ever seen. Kunta was my favorite character in the book as well.
Even though the young Kunta Kinte is only in the first two episodes, LeVar Burton is what made the show for me. Levar Burton is a revelation and it surprises me that he isn't doing more movies. He reminded me of those silent film stars who show with their eyes. The rest of the actors performed their characters just as well, and it gave me an impression of them playing their characters with the whole of their hearts. In this story Kunta is ... Read More:

I believe a review worth reading should include a brief description of the person giving their thoughts. To me,this helps a great deal in deciding how much credibility I will give a person's thinking. I am a white male,48 years old, happily married going on nineteen years with five children and six grandchildren.I was born in the state of Texas, and raised to befriend people based on their actions-not the color of their skin.I,like most people, have been influenced often times by what has been taught through traditions or hearsay instead of facts, because facts often times takes some effort to discover. I have just recently read the book Roots, and was so overcome by a multitude of aroused emotions I purchased the mini-series on DVD.My wife, children and I viewed ... Read More:

. Crocodile Hunter
City Travel Guides > VHS > VHS
starring: Steve Irwin (II), Terri Irwin
May 20, 2003
It's a shame that this particular episode didn't make a DVD, because this is one of the most incredible rescues that Australia Zoo has ever undertaken, surpassing even the Bunya Rescue (unfortunately not available for home purchase.) This episode truly exemplifies what Steve Irwin & the Australia Zoo team will go through, in order to save the lives of the wildlife they value so highly. You get a somewhat deeper insight into the working of the Zoo -- an advance team led by Zoo Director Wes Mannion was sent in; he was aided by Head Croc Keeper Brian Coulter. Even before the camera crews arrived, these men were working to find the supplies necessary to build two croc enclosures in war torn East Timor. When Steve arrives, things really begin to heat ...
