Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Another wonderful book in the series
Susanna Gregory writes wonderful, well researched books. She manages to bring medieval Cambridge to life and paints a fascinating picture in her books. On top of that, the mysteries are great and well devised. Truly one of the most enjoyable series I have ever read.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great read
Susanna Gregory's books are great reads on many levels. The recreation of the mediaeval period is done in great and highly realistic detail and the mystery's are well plotted and full of unexpected twists. One of the most enjoyable aspects though, is the dialogue and banter between the characters which gives them depth and makes them seem more lifelike. An excellent read which makes you look forward to the next in the series with anticipation.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Medieval Fiction at its Very Best
Susanna Gregory is not as prolific a writer as many of the authors who write this style of book and the anticipation of waiting for a new title can be quite frustrating for the reader. However the wait is always worthwhile.

Her choice of Cambridge as the main backdrop to her books is inspired. It seems to lull the reader into a world of spires and colleges inhabited by the students and academics who teach there. There is also always the underground rumblings of the inhabitants of the city who are constantly at loggerheads with the colleges and hate the students intensely, thinking of them as nothing more than thugs and bully boys.

Now to a little background from the book, which of course to make a complete liar of me ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Another carefully constructed mystery...
... which evokes all the grime and grit and beauty of the mediaeval period. The suspects are numerous and the denouement unexpected. I loved every page, and really couldn't put it down. I read it all in one sitting and am now about to go back to book number 1 to read through all the chronicles again.

If you have never read a Matthew Bartholomew tale before, these can be enjoyed as stand alone works, but you won't get the full flavour and build up of the relationship between all the parties unless you start at the beginning. That's is no hardship however as each novel is so wonderfully written.

Ms Gregory - please write more!
