Faulkner's book is a fine account of the era and the revolt. Thanks largely to his rigourous materialist approach to the evidence. What is particularly impressive is the well-judged comparisons with modern history. Best of all is the astonishing account of the retreat of the Roman legions from Jerusalem. Faulkner imaginatively recreates every step of the retreat and what it would have been like. Frankly, it's far more exciting than most historical novelists can produce. That's the kind of writing that Simon Scarrow might well be very jealous of!

clear, concise well written and well researched. The subject is not one thats been done to death (please no more books on the temple of solomon!) and it not only informs but its a REALLY good read as well. Worth every penny.
