Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Emotional encounter across time
I had been on the trail of my great grandfather a corporal in the 9th KOYLI. I only had a few family myths, a few sepia photos, and the date he was KIA @ Ypres. As I turned the pages of this book from 1914 until his fateful day in October 1917 a melancholy descended. How had he survived so much? What of the wounds I could see in a leave photo after the Somme? The text only scratched the surface, raised more questions and turned this bit of family history into a hazzy nightmare. A black and white photo in the book shows the battlefield where I guess his remains lie burried. Perhaps I will take the book and a map and go for walk and try to understand a bit more. Thankyou Mr Clayton.

Given the abundance of books written on the Great War, most of which seem to be written about the Somme or Passchendaele, it was nice to see someone attempt a battalion history, this book being on the 9th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. It certainly has the feel of 'a book written by an officer for the officers about the officers' as I put it.
With a special interest in Loos I read this specific chapter with hopeful anticipation on learning something new about the actions of a specific battalion there. I was however to have my hopes ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This is a really good book!
When I heard about this book, I thought it sounded like my sort of book, and it didn't disappoint me.

I was enthralled: this tale of courage in the First World War is a true story, and it is so exciting and interesting it had me turning the pages at an alarming rate.

Derek Clayton may be an author to look out for in the future, because his debut book is brilliant.
