Editorial Review:
Synopsis: This work bills itself as the first comprehensive travel guide to the Sudan. It takes a pretty standard approach to the topic, first offering chapters on the country's geography, wildlife, peoples, and history and then discussing planning and preparation, general issues of travel in Sudan, and health and safety before moving on to a region-by-regio

Other than the Sudan chapter in Lonely Planet's Africa guide this is the only Sudan guidebook available. Lots of details on history, preparation, paperwork and the like, but it does miss out a lot of details (hotels, restaurants, car hire etc.) and gives pretty much no info on south Sudan.
Additionally a lot has changed since this book was researched (2004/2005) many more roads in the north are now paved, and prices have increased considerably (in hard currency terms). If you are heading to Sudan however it is still worth buying, but also look for information on the internet to fill in the gaps in this guide.

The Sudan is a daunting place for travel. Its pleasures are often gentle and difficult to access, and the environment, physical and bureaucratic, is challenging. This book rightly steers clear of the troubled areas but points effectively to the parts of Sudan which are reachable and worthwhile. It is full of useful, practical tips. We have camped in the desert and been on some long road trips based on this book, and it has been helpful and pretty accurate. The use of GPS coordinates is particularly useful.

As with any guide - things change. The author clearly has a great passion for Sudan and has done some good research. There are a few inconsistencies and changes but overall I would recommend this guide as I found it very useful. If anyone would like my updates please mail me. June
