The Observer, September 7 2003: Buying a House in Italy by Gordon Neale is an excellent guide.
Book Description: Although Italy is now easier and cheaper to get to than every thanks to the budget airlines, large parts of the country have escaped the recent British craze for buying and renovating property abroad and there are still bargains to be found there. Buying a House in Italy provides everything one needs to know to buy a house in Italy whether for use as a holiday home, a base while starting a new working life, an investment or as somewhere to spend retirement. Anyone considering buying in Italy needs to understand the Italian process of housebuying and the important parts played by the notaio, geometra and sometimes the avvocato, so this book is essential reading for anyone considering buying there; it tells readers all they need to know including:
- How to raise finance and transfer currency. - Finding and dealing with estate agents and other professionals. - What inspections and surveys are necessary. - Conveyancing and exchanging contracts. - Arranging removals and taking pets. - Getting power, water and other services connected . To help readers find their ideal home the book covers the entire country from the Alps to Sicily, not just regions such as Tuscany and Umbria that are already popular with expatriate buyers, with a regional guide explaining the characters of the different areas and the types and price of property to be found there. Special features include:
- Full coverage of up-and-coming areas. - Comparative tables of prices to show where to find the best value for money. - Information on the regions’ geography, climate and cuisine.
The book also gives essential information for when the purchase is complete, from how to deal with builders and other craftsmen when restoring or renovating to making money from a house by renting it out. Also provided is essential background information covering the history, culture and economy of Italy, its climate and language, visa, permit and residence regulations, the health care, banking and education systems, etc, etc.

Extremely impressed with this book, really in-depth research, with lots of information. See 'culture shock' page 34 spot on observations about the Italian way of life. A really interesting chapter about ideas for new businesses in Italy page 300. Worth reading also is the case histories page 309. Maybe not enough website addresses and telephone numbers but the background research made up for it. I will be recommending it to visitors on my site www.italianproperties.org
