Its simple object, in the author's own words, is to guide the reader to places he might otherwise miss and, having reached them, to tell him what he might wish to know and then leave him, preferably at a café, to admire, to enjoy, and perhaps be disappointed. The illustrations show the visitor, as he confronts a view, what his predecessors of a hundred, two hundred or five hundred years ago saw from the same point. Two sections of colour plates have been added, showing how the beauty of Venice inspired the 18th century view painters. The main part of the book describes four walks, each of which can be completed in one day, although there are points in each at which one can break off and return another day. Maps, old and new are provided for each walk. The introduction deals with the Piazza S. Marco and its neighbourhood, and appendices are devoted to the public boat services, food and drink and books about Venice. One chapter is entitled 'Venice for Children's Pleasure. Customer Reviews

 Rating:  - Don't enter the maze without it.JG Link's book is quite simply the best guide book to take to Venice for a long weekend. Why? because there is such an embarrasment of riches to see, places to go and his guided walks organise and make sense of it all. Its like having your personal guide at hand whispering in your ear, pointing out the little details that you might otherwise miss. Personally i would pack an illustrated guide like the Everyman too for colour and more traditional guidebook information. Rating:  - Pretty but not a travel guideI've never been tempted to write a review before but felt compelled to give feedback on this particular book. I bought it purely because of the wonderful reviews on Amazon and perhaps I'm missing the point but I was rather disappointed upon receiving it. Yes it looks very pretty, the pictures are delightful and it's a lovely little book to keep and dip into more as a coffee table book than a guide. A nice gift to give your mum for Christmas, she wont read it but she'll like the pictures. I dislike the way it's written, "if we walk along this road, we will reach this bridge" etc. Rather odd. Quite patronising. And the text is difficult to read, there's a lack of headings and it's not easy to pick out points of ... Read More: Rating: - How to Enjoy VeniceMy first encounter with this wonderful book was when Joe Links gave me a dedicated copy just before my second trip to Venice in 1993. It gave me such joy and pleasure to read it now never leaves my house... it is far too precious to take anywhere. I have since bought a revised (and illustrated) version which to my delight contains a photograph of the author, a dear man who knew his subject inside out and was passionate about it. This is the one which now accompanies me on my travels. I have many Venetian guidebooks but this is my absolute favourite, it is knowledgeable and erudite, but never over intellectualises, and always shows you that Venice is to be enjoyed, not just wondered at. When given the option of a cafe or a gallery - JG Links encourages the reader to tarry awhile, enjoy the atmosphere, and sample the local wines - the galleries can wait. No restaurant or hotel reviews. A delight. Rating: - I wish there were guide books like this for other placesJ G Links is a wonderful companion to have when you're visiting Venice - funny and informative. If you go, you really should take this book. It won't help you choose a restaurant but it will make Venice come alive. |
