What can I say about this book. This is the best book I have read in a long long while.
From beginning to finish, this book was gripping and tense and gave a sense of what small provincal Italian teams go through in a typical season.
The book also gave an insight into the darker side of football, holliganism, but with the way it was written, it seems that the fans are not blame and it is the police who aggrivate the situation and make it worse.
All can say is that if you have a passion for football and like to experience the joys and sorrows that real fans go through in a season, this is the book to read.
I guarantee, once you pick up this book, you will find it very very difficult to put down again.
Well done to Tim Parks, we need more books like this.

As a fan Of football and more specifically Italian Football, on seeing this book I decided to but it, and what a read. From the moment the season begins it is one rollercoaster ride of a game after another, well written and brilliantly funny Tim Parks makes a seemingly un-glamourous football team into a group of players you actually care about. It is however the fans stories that are the most interesting and it is these that really make the book. The passion that these fans show for Hellas Verona is incredible. I have certainly become a fan of the best team in Verona and indeed of the writer Tim Parks.

An excellent account of a year in the life of an "ordinary football fan". Forget your AC Milans, Manchester Uniteds and Real Madrids, this is what most fans of non-glamorous clubs have to put up with all the time! - will my team survive relegation? The author combines his agonies with neatly interwoven accounts of the Italian psyche and cultural differences. I defy anyone not to check on the ending before they are half way through the book and then there is a twist in the tale because of the vagaries of life in Serie A! My best read of the summer so far.

Italian football to me used to mean: fancy dan players with long hair rolling around on the pitch throwing their arms in the air, fanatical supporters lighting flares and bald referees with very scary eyes... after reading this book Italian football means: pretty much the same, except now i know why. A superb indepth look at Italian football, the players, coaches but above all the fans. The people that turn out week after week with half going home in despair. FORZA GIALLO-BLU

Whether you dod or don't know anything about Italian football, this book will educate and enthrall you. It's not just the well detailed action from the games themselves but the excitement of the travelling to away games and the stories behind rivalries that makes this book so good.
By the last few chapters, I really found myself getting behind Verona and really supporting them.
When I finished this book, I was exhausted, and I'd learnt to appreciate the rivalries, look down on the terroni(southerners) and hate Juve.
