Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic
Another brilliant book by Alison Weir. Really sheds light on the reign of Mary I

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Enjoyable history
Another good read from Alison Weir about a subject she handles well. Her Tudor histories (The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Elizabeth the Queen) are her best. The lives of the 'Children of England' were pure drama; the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth perhaps the most fascinating aspect.

Incidentally, if you enjoyed this book, you'd love David Starkey's 'Elizabeth'.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An excellent book which stands out in a crowded field
I thought this would be just another book about the Tudors - but it casts new light on the Tudors and gives insight into the later actions of both Mary and Elizabeth. An excellent read.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Another fine history by Alison Weir
Another in a whole shelf of excellent books by Alison Weir. This one covers the period from Henry VIII's death to the ascension of Elizabeth to the throne. The scheming of the Duke of Northumberland, protector to the boy-king Edward is interesting enough, but the book really hits its stride with Queen Mary. She is portrayed as a gentle, kind and genuinely caring woman. She ism a much loved Queen until her religious zeal gets the better of her and she becomes convinced that she must burn (literally) the cancer of protestantism out of England. But her story is handled with great sympathy and the tradegy of her phantom pregnancies is fascinating and heartbreaking. Overall this is an excellent book marred, perhaps by the lack of detail of ordinary life at the time. How did people cope with the upheaval, the rumours and plotting and their religion being forcibly changed at least twice ! . Roll on Mrs Weir, give us more.
