I won't elaborate on what other reviewers have said. A really interesting and well written novel about an American/Cuban hit man working for the mob. It touches on ground covered in Ellroy's American Tabloid (e.g. Kennedys, Hoffa etc). Slightly disappointing ending, in my opinion - all lose ends tied up a little bit too quickly - could have easily been another 200 pages without dragging. Looking forward to the next one.

This is a superb book. Like previous reviews have said it kind of grabs you right from page one and doesn't let go. This is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Never heard of the author before. Someone bought me the hardback as a gift. Have already ordered his first two, and pre-ordered the fourth. Great stuff! Can only hope that he keeps on writing books like this. This is the kind of thing that should be a huge bestseller, because the guy can really, really write. Amazing!

THIS IS ONE HELL OF A BOOK!! I'm not a big fan of Mafia books, but then this isn't really a Mafia book as such. It's just a great thriller, and a great history behind the thrills. As good as anything I've read in the police procedural/murder-mystery/thriller genre, but also really well written. A great big epic monster of a thing that hooks you right from the start and won't let go. Buy it. Read it.

It is quite rare these days to discover a book that truly surprises me, but here we are - A QUIET VENDETTA by Roger Jon Ellory. I had heard of Candlemoth, his first book (a book I have since read), but never really paid much attention. I cannot remember seeing any advertisements for any of his novels, and A Quiet Vendetta came to me on recommendation from a friend. I am not one to believe in hype, and thus have read nothing by Dan Brown. I have read a vast wealth of different books - Annie Proulx, Richard Russo, Michael Connelly, Truman Capote, James Lee Burke, and over the years have tended to gravitate towards books that are not only great stories, but that are written really, really well. Nowadays, with the seeming wealth of books that are 'same old same old' it is a delight to discover something that really doesn't slot into a predetermined pigeonhole. So it is with this book, about as far from a 'paint by numbers' thriller as you could get. An earlier reviewer has said all that needs to be said about the different elements of the book, and all I can add is that this is a truly magnificent read. Violent yes, but then it is a book about a Mafia hitman, the biography of an assassin if you like. But within this biography are areas of politics, love, redemption, revenge, an FBI investigation into the kidnapping of a Governor's daughter...and so much more! This is an amazing book. It really is. I have already ordered Ghostheart and City of Lies for September. I also checked out the guy's website and it looks like we have an awful lot more truly great books to come! I'm sold! I'm with this one for life!

Oh my god! I started reading this book & could not put it down. I stayed up until 4:00 am reading until my eyes could not stay open any longer but upon awakening I immeadiatly took up the book again & finished it by lunch time. This book is amazing! I fell in love with the characters. The plot is great - intricate yet doesn't boggle the brain. It flows nicely & it all falls into place wonderfully. It's gritty, dark but oh so beautiful & Ellory inspires with his great story telling. His best work yet. Read it or forever miss out on this masterpiece!
