Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gripping
Francisco Goldman has written superb books and is on my wish list for a Nobel Lit. prize. It is hardly possible to put THE ART OF POLITICAL MURDER down for a cup of tea, being a gripping, 'muscular' murder story. The focus of this mesmerizing book is on the impugnity of the the Guatemalan government and their military and secret service leaders - their devious machinations over many years to remain 'not guilty' for the assassination of Bishop Gerardi. As such, it is a good parallel to another excellent book by Philippe Sands, QC: THE TORTURE TEAM, concerning the machinations of the Bush government to remain 'not guilty' of war crimes for torture in Guantanamo. I wish to thank Mr. Goldman for his integrity, guts and brilliant research and writing. Well done!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Who supplied the weapons?
I am in the process of ordering this book. Having lived/worked in Guatemala for 6 years from 1979 I was aware of the troubles generally but not the detail which was well hidden. However I do know which country supplied the Guatemalan military with weapons and technical support. I hope the book mentions this aspect. We will see. I should add it was not the US that supplied the arms, etc. Although the country that did was a US ally. The principle weapon was a rifle called the Galil. The reason I know this is because in 1979, shortly after I arrived, I purchased a car from a young man who was leaving Guatemala after a tour of duty, attached to the US embassy. He came from and was returning to Israel. He told me what he had been doing. At the time it did not strike me. But subsequently, after some time in Guatemala and greater understanding of the situation, I was shocked. Another book worth reading about the history of Guatemala is called Bitter Fruit - Schlesinger and Kinzer.
