- I wish I had never seen this book......
........as it would enable me to discover it all over again!
Some books deserve to be reprinted when out of copyright, and this book is one of them. It is full of concise insights into the world of real criminals of the eighteenth century. It covers a wide spectrum of crimes including rioting, fraud, highway robbery, and cannibalism.
While some crimes that sent people to Newgate prison (London) would not receive such severe punishment these days, some are outrageous even by today’s standards. The book was compelling, and at times repelling at the same time.
This is a singular piece of work, and my suggestion is that for anyone interested in prisons, British 18th century history, criminals,or crimes consider this a piece of easy reading that you will probably enjoy greatly. I would also recomend this book to anyone who likes to read anything slightly unusual, or if you just want a very good read.
